St. Patricks Day Parades and Politics
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:44:37 AM »
This weekend a lot of parades went on all over the country.  No surprises here, but Colorado Springs had a bit of an extra.

We had a group that participated "to celebrate their Irish heritage" as their application to be a part of the parade states.  Instead they chose that time to protest the war.  The organiser of the event asked them to please leave after many people showed their disgust with the political message.

When they refused, the police were called in and they were arrested amongst many political slurs throw at police by the protestors, including one 67 year old woman's tirade that included obscenities and refusal to leave the spot.  The ensuing arrest of her was that she fought hard enough to be dropped, and then subsequently dragged to the police wagon.

It seems to me that this was a planned and staged attempt to delude the parade organiser to be able to get out a political message.  This mornings talk shows here in Colorado Springs have been full of mostly support for the arrests and disgust that these selfcentered protestors tried to ruin a day of celebration of Irish heritage (atleast most Americans see it that way).

What are your thoughts?

Mine, I am glad they were arrested, and think they should be also charged with conspiracy to cause a riot and endangerment of the public.

Protesters that wish to stand their ground and not obey a lawful order to disperse should not whine when they get road rash.

Nice attempt at putting words in my mouth.

That is not the case at all.  If you want to protest, fine by all means protest.  It is a right in this country.  Just make sure you get the proper permit to do such.  They chose not to.  Instead, they chose to make political statements during a non-political event.  Then, when rightly asked to leave the event, they instead chose not to, and were placed under arrest for failure to disperse.  Their actions caused the the confrontation with police, not the event organisers, not the police, and not the people watching the parade.

Any "Irish" which protest against fighting... cannot possibly be Irish.

Yup Bodhi.  They looks a VERY dangerous bunch.

And as we all know, Colo Springs is vulnerable to hardened endangerers of this ilk.

Off with their Heads,

Hap,

The law should apply to everyone.

They broke it.  They should in turn reap the cosequences of their actions. Unfortunately the liberals in society today are all about no consequences for their actions.

They sat in the road and blocked the parade route.  How would you move them out of the way?

first, let me state that I couldn't care less about the protestors in the OP.

...but, hmm, a permit to protest?  if its peaceful and no property is damaged and no traffic is obstructed why should that be required?

what happens when the government you are protesting against will not issue the "required" permit?

why neo-cons of course.

you can't have a good protest without the media, parades have media, so you protest in the parades.

I did lookup conspiracy , the definition is not the same as protest.
When I can't disagree they were not right ,as the mean and the place they used was IMO not good ,it's IMO (again) not a conspiracy I find the word too strong.
