Just a FYI verizon has sued vonage for patent infringment on 5 patents
verizon WON on 3 of them and was awarded 58 million and has asked for an IMMEDIATE injunction pluse 5.5% of vonage revenue wich it will be most likely awarded.
Voange says service wont be interupted however once the injunction goes thru all service stops.

Just wanted to warn any vonage users out there.

specultion at verizon is that vonage will have to come under the verizon umbrella

guess i thought more peeps used vonage here and would be concerned
personaly i dont have enough faith in VOIP to use it.
Word around the office is that verizon will prolly take over vonage in some shape or form. just look at how at&t is gobbling up company's. all about taking as much of the mrkt as they can before someone in the govt cries foul.

I dont see it that way.   Verizon is desperate to get customers...

Verizon claimed during the trial that it has lost 600,000 customers to Vonage as a result of the pilfered patents.

and thats just Vonage.
More like they lost 600,000 customers because they dont provide the services their customers want.

I have had VoIP from Lingo for almost 2 years now, $29.95 a month, I can call anywhere in the US, Canada and Western Europe for free.  It also includes call waiting, call fowarding, caller ID plus voice mail.   I had phone service with Verizon for the previous 6 years, phone service was $45 a month just to have a phone and metro service so calls to Austin werent billed as long distance.  that didnt even include long distance service, average phone bill was between $55 to $65.

no thanks, I dont want Verzion back in my life.  I would almost bet that if Vonage loses their appeal on this decsion then Verizon will go after the other VoIP providers also.

How does Verizon have patents on VOIP technology?

Edit:  I like the "Christmas Tree" analogy.  Unless they stole some specific software or hardware, what technology is there that is patentable?

Verizon sued Vonage last year for infringing on five patents that it said makes the Internet telephone service network functional. The jury found Vonage infringed on three of them -- including one for linking Internet calls to the traditional phone network and another for features like call waiting.

Its in the linking to "regular" land lines that is the biggest issue. i dont have all the particulars but its in the use of certain switching equipment and protocols.

Eagler: Verizon isnt setting itself up to be the ONLY provider for phone, internet and TV. AT&T is trying there version of FTTP only theres is fiber to the curb.....actually fiber to a main hub for a neighborhood and on existing copper from there, they are having alot of issues with it still and are very far behind us as far as build out and having certain "bugs" worked out of the system

The various cable companies have been offering there veriosns for years. its only been in the last 2 that they have had serious competition and are struggling to adapt. this includes lowering there prices wich they have raised steadily the last 10 years or more while there costs have actually been declining.

Airscrew: verizon is NOT desperate for customers. the 600,000 mentioned in the article was referring to verizon's voicewing wich is our VOIP.....honestly its not all it should be. this is why many feel that verizon will move to be in some form of partnership with vonage

As for verizon service, its getting better. Its gonna take awhile to overcome the stigma of the past in how all the phone companies dealt with there customers. Mainy we are still fighting and winning in D.C with the cable companies and the stranglehold they have had over there customers.
verizon fios aint perfect and is still being fleshed out but its still ALOT better than time weeeeeener:O
