New American Heavy Tank: M26 'Pershing'
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:16:03 PM »
I've always thought the American never got enough tanks for Aces High but I have an Idea, another one of those 'Muscle Tanks' that can counter even a Tiger

Research Link:
http://www.wwiivehicles.com/usa/tanks-heavy/m26.asp

The M26 was produced when The Armored Command thought that the M4 'Sherman' would do well enough for the allies, however the Famous counteroffensive in the Battle of the Bulge changed opinions.
Several models were developed and the 90mm model was accepted over 76mm models.

The Production values are reasonable as they are comparable to some Sherman production amounts and is probably produced greater than the Tiger

I like the idea of the firefly, half the people here dont know that there are many variants of the Sherman...........how annoying the .50 is:D

Edit: You guys do know there is a Browning M2HB .50 Caliber on the Pershing?

What exactly is the difference between the Firefly and a 'regular' Sherman?

the standard sheman had a 75mm main gun. the firefly has a brit 17 pounder. the only real difference is firefly has a bigger better gun

Over 50,000 Shermans produced, would be very very odd if they were
all the same :)

More to the point, the standard Sherman was designed to be first and foremost an infantry support tank.  The Sherman Firefly was first and foremost a tank killer.

Question from an unber-non-expertent tanker. How would a 17lb gun compare to a metric measurement for a tank gun? 90mm?

What the brits called the 6 lber is what we called the 57mm, and I
believe the famous 25 lber was 3.45 inches compared to the US 105mm
which was 4.1 inch.  I believe the 17lber was 76.2mm.

Diameter alone did not make the tank gun.  If memory serves the Panther used a 76mm gun which actually had superior penetration against armor than the famed 88mm on the Tiger.

Same was the case with the M-18's 76mm vs the sherman's. Sometimes you gotta wonder about the logic involved. Don't want a British gun in a Sherman? OK... put in a Hellcat's gun instead and call it a Sherman... Cat?
