RWY bombing.
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:00:44 PM »
I have a question. Today I took off in my B24s loaded down with fuel and 500lbers. I was going to hit a Rook field and take out their fighter hangers. When I got on station someone had already done this. I was at 20K and noted a ton of bad guys on the runway taking off/landing. So I adjusted and ran the sight down the centerline of the runway dropping one bomb every second. In the end I racked up a kill and an bellybutton load of assists. A guy came on 200 crying about it. Telling me to be a man and fly lower. I have been a member of AH for a few years now...but I have never delt with something like this.
I didnt see anything wrong with my tactic. I saw a chance to clear the airspace up a bit with a few bombs and took it. Now my question is what do you guys think about this tactic? Is it fair? Is it lame? Should I do it again? I felt mixed on my return flight home. On the one hand I felt like I was bombing a valid target and I wish I would have killed more of them on the ground. On the other hand it did seem a bit noobish to drop bombs on the runway.

If they didn't want you bombing their base, they should have upped and intercepted you.  Who gives a rats rear-end about what some dope on 200 thinks?

Runway bombing is/was an accepted tactic.  If anything, the game needs a base damage model that can make runway cratering into account.  We should be able to drop enough bombs (and it really only takes a few well placed ones) to make a runway unusable (say for the same 15 minutes that the hangers are down).  That wouldn't stop guys from upping fighters from hangers and taking off on the grass, but it should stop guys from upping loaded buffs on a runway that looks like the surface of the moon.

I doubt the 200 whiner would have any compunction about wacking your bombers at low altitude if he was coming in with the altitude advantage.  You spent the time climbing up to 20K, you got the benefit of a well planned bombing mission that racked up a lot of kills.  RTB and have a cold one in the O Club.

Ordnance vulching, while irritating to those on the receiving end, is an uncommon skill in the MAs. I happen to enjoy it immensely, although I'm not very good at it. If you have this talent, make use of it.

It is perfectly acceptable to vulch anyone but me in this manner.

Sounds like they picked the wrong time to take off or they thought the whistle of the falling bombs was chow call.

One time about a year or two ago I was up in my Lancs at probably 23K as usual.  I can't remember what happened or why but I found myself diving.  I probably had just had my drones shot down and had been turn fighting someone to try to stay alive with my final buff.  That's usually the only explanation for me giving up alt.

Anyway, whatever the reason I was diving and it happened to be toward an enemy field.  I still had bombs on-board and, as I started to pull up I let the bombs go.

To my surprise I got 6 kills!

That was the one and only time I've ever dive bombed (or even bombed from low alt) in a Lanc and it was totally lucky.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.
