Tracers (wish list)
« on: March 27, 2007, 12:25:14 PM »
Would just like to put the idea out there for the tracers on/off option to be able to be selected by what you are in.

As a fighter I like to have my tracers turned off, I like to get my kills as sneaky as possible and that means so tracers buzzing past the enemy cockpit.

However being there is only a "master" on/off selection it means if I up a flack/ bomber or what ever I have to fly no tracers as well.

This isn't a complaint or anything jut a "wish list" post, but it would be great if you could choose tracers on or off for each group of vehicles.  So Bombers, GV's, field guns and fighters could each have a separate option.

Just a thought.. :D

I had a similar idea years ago, but it was more about having the ability to turn tracers off for the secondary and on for the primary.

Yep, it's been asked for many times, in various forms.
Tracer placement or omission at different points in the different belts, historical or personal tracer colors, etc.

If you turn your tracers off are they off just for you, or for the enemy also?

Half the reason some like to turn it off is they feel it helps their aim.
Personally I dont find my aim to be any different one way or the other.

the other half is so that you can sneak up on your opponent and fire away miss a bunch of times without your victim knowing your there because he doesnt see any tracer rounds

so yes. they are off for both you, and the enemy

Ah, thanks.

I read somewhere the other day, I've got a feeling it was in a book called Fighter Boys (forget the author now, can find out if people care), that later in the war Allied units stopped using tracers in the ETO and their losses were reduced by around 50%.

Robert L. "Mouse" Shaw writes about how some squadrons stopped using tracers in WWII in his book Fighter Combat tactics and Maneuvering.

Watch any old guncam footage, they almost always show no tracers until the end of the belt. At least in USAAF films.

Primarily API and slugs.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Some guys did that so they would know when they where low on ammo.  Problem was, the enemy figured that out.

I have also been told that bomber gunners used EXTRA tracers, as to scare off the enemy.
I bet this would've worked in some way, just watch the endles stream of bullets coming at you when you attack a formation of B-17's!

Yeah it is a neat idea, I've read so many stories of WW2 dogfights were the pilot just got tired of seeing all those tracer rounds so he flicked a switch and wahlah!!!  Their all gone!
:huh
