I fiddled with the gamma (I shouldn't have to; other games have an acceptable gamma setting by default, including previous versions of Aces High II).  Now it still looks terrible, as anything supposed to be black is grey and anything grey is near white.  But at least it's playable now.  I maintain that the colors are terrible.

Something does seem to be off as to color levels or gamma.  Enough remarks in a short period of time to point to that.  Having a hard time adjusting to a happy medium myself, and I can see long play being hard on the eyes.

I don't have quite the problem in depth perception re> grass textures some seem to be experiencing, but I can see it being a possible problem.

As BaldEagl pointed out: "deforestation" -- going to miss taking a Yak down on the deck and dodge around trees with 3 or 4 bad guys on my 6.  No forest paths to fly down, under the tree tops any more either.

Jury Still Out
Going to have to pay attention to Sherman model.  I know there were tweaks overall across the GV models from what I saw in the ReadMe.  Took quite a bit of effort from one IL2's guns to take out a Sherman.  Hurri-D seemed to work just fine against another one though.  Way too early to make a judgment either way as to new GV damage models, and will have to see what may be different in CAS against other GV's as well.

On the PLUS side:
Runways and taxi ways looking very good.
Overall tiles looking good.
Windmills.  Nice touch along with the reintroduction of the much missed sheep.
hedgerows a nice touch.  Haven't played in GV's enough for any problems with them yet to be identified.
The dense Arden forests look great.  Large groves of pines.  Very nicely done.  Looks great from the air.  Will have to drive into one sometime.  Much improvement to the trees.
The gunpits are a huge upgrade, as are the new gun representations found in those gunpits.
Seems to be some changes in flames? Or smoke?  I hit a strat factory tonight, and the overall effects were nicer, but I just can't place what is different.
The Death Star Moon as cleared the planet Yavin.
Beaches looked great.
Did not notice any real frame rate hit.

Overall a very nice effort.  Nice fresh eye candy.

Im actually very disapointed.

From a GV the terrain looks much much better then before I give you that but from a plane???? Christ the green grass color is horrible. Same tone of green for miles and miles and miles. Looks like someone spilled a gigantic bucket of plastic paint over the landscape.

Seriously the colors need adjusting and the titles need variation for distance.

The sea looks like a dried in mud pile. The animated water was quite bad compared to water effect of other games but this water is a step 10 years back in graphics.

Overall the game from up in the sky looks like it just got 5 years older and it was old to start with. And yes Ive got all my graphics details and sliders maxed out as Im running a high end system.

I thought this game was Aces HIGH and hence there would be some focus to the visuals from the AIR.

Have clouds been updated from the 10 year old billboards? In fact I didnt even see any coulds.

Very disapointing I was hoping this would be a step forward for AH2.

I hate to say it but the terrain looks like crap. The detail is gone theres a patch if trees here and there but it is like Im flying in AH1 all over again. Talk about no cover for GVs. What happened to the grass? Water looks just as bad. I liked the old version better.

...er...it shouldn't be any worse than having combat over the water always was, should it?

Seems to me that this is much more like real flying, where you don't get a huge sense of differing terrain elevations unless you're down under 500 feet AGL or so.

I agree with others on the appearance of the ground from the air.  The large areas of astro turf need a little work, but overall I am pleased with this version.

The bases and the towns look great.  The additional trees bushes and fields make it look more real.  The runways looks great.  The ack emplacments look great.

I am reading a lot about the "darkness" but I don't seem to have an issue at all, I must look a little closer.

I hear about eye strain, no issue there either.

Great job HTC..  I like it.

I flew one hop, I think it was in NDIsles.

It is a LITTLE dark. Not terrible, but a little dark, I agree. Of course, I often keep my gamma turned DOWN, because the sun is often absurdly bright and glaring, and we do not have sunglasses or tinted goggles (I find that very unrealistic, I think we should be able to toggle sunglasses or something on and off).

The general layout is somewhat boring. Maybe put SOME of the farms back, but not so many, as it looked pretty redundant/repetitive before.

The water just plain sucks. Reminds me of the water in the fake volcanic lake in the old Bond movie "You Only Live Twice". Sorry, but it is just dull and flat, not to mention boring and ugly.

No problem with the contrast.

The colors are sort of bland and muddled, but not too bad.

Now, this was ONE short hop, from a shoreline base, where I took off and varied between 200 and 2000 feet, and flew over both land and water, for about 15 minutes or so. I did NOT touch my settings, I left them alone ON PURPOSE. All in all, I'd say the changes were 60% good, and 40% bad, mostly I dislike the muddled bland colors and the purely ugly water. The roads, hedgerows, bridges, gun emplacements, and other new detail enhancements were nice.

I did NOT get up into any clouds, nor did I take a GV hop. Maybe later, after work, and if I get my USB issues solved.

At first I had no problem with the shades/color.  Lifted off and thought ... hey this lookd pretty good...

got into a few fights with allot of turning, climbing and diving.........

Maybe it's the rapid change required to the eye from looking at the bright  then the dark?

Not sure ....

Just know I got a headache after 20 minutes or so of flying.

AceHigh II after last patch ... HEADACHE!

When AHII 1st came out I complained to several that there was an, IMHO, imbalance with the ground and sky colors/shades.

Some of my squadies agreed.  Had to do something that was unneeded in AHI,  INCREASE GAMMA.  Increased it from 1.0 to 1.4 to be able to see and fight.

Yes stuff LOOKS GOOD!  The art work is GREAT!  IMHO it is really really good, and for the GV'ers it's probably wonderful!!!!!!!!!  Is AHII going to become another WWII Online?

BUT the contrast? or maybe a better way of expressing it, the choice of color shades when combined SEEM to HURT the eyes, or create eye strain.

With this patch it SEEMS much more pronounced then before.

No mater where I put gamma, no mater how I adjust my monitor settings, no mater what I do, I can not set AHII this patch to ANY level of eye comfort.:furious

Have you even considered that maybe last night was a bad night for you, and maybe, you might have been on your way to a headache BEFORE you played?

Seriously, after a few (20, you say) minutes, of ONE session, you declare it unplayable, and completely the fault of the game. And post about how you'll leave if they don't address your issues immediately.

You're the only person I've seen complaining so bitterly and talking about a headache. Maybe, just maybe, you should try making some adjustments first. Relax, try adjusting a few things, and for crying out loud, give them a couple of days before you go off on a tangent.

The airfields look really nice. Its the rest of the terrain thats missing something. Its very flat. The edges of rises in terrain, like the high spots on the ground, and the rims of ravines dont show up for me. I'd like them to tinker with the colors a bit to see if they can get it to look better.

IMHO assumptions are being made here regarding my expression of problems with the latest patch of AH....................

OK here ya are..................

Tried repeatedly.............  (online and offline more then 7 times)

waited awhile after each try..........

headache went away during each waiting period.......

headache returned during each attempt at AH.............

adjusted monitor, AH gamma, tried everything I could think of................

even tried different glasses............

headache returns when I go into AH....................

there......... does that give, or create, a better explaination?

Bitterly?

Perhaps.............

I greatly enjoy AH....... ain't anything else quite like it........ don't want to be pushed out due to this problem....................

When I have problems I try to fix them BEFORE I take the complaint to anyone else.......................
