LOL.  I forgot, you get 2 years for that.  It is interesting to note that Singapore really does have a very low crime rate.  Experts attribute this to
a lack of racial diversity and a robust economy.  Bully for them!

So Singapore is a country where no one has ever been shot or mugged or burglarized?

Singapore 2007 Crime & Safety Report

Quote
Available crime statistics for the first half of 2006 show a decrease in the following categories of crime in Singapore: housebreaking, theft offenses, and robbery. An increase in rape for the period was negligible. Murder cases reported for the first half of the year rose to fourteen, compared to five cases reported for the same period in 2005. These crime rates are low for a city-state of 4.5 million people. Complete crime statistics for 2006 will be published in the first quarter of 2007, and any significant changes will be reported after the information becomes available from Singapore Police authorities....

......A few incidents of serious crime involved attacks of Singaporeans by fellow Singaporeans with edged weapons. These attacks appear to be retribution linked to low-level criminal activities. One contract murder with a handgun occurred during 2006, but edged-weapons are the weapons of choice for serious attackers due to the unavailability of firearms. Comparatively speaking, the crime rate in Singapore remains much lower than in any other major metropolitan city, however, residents and visitors should be aware of their environment and exercise the same amount of caution they would in any other large city.

So it would appear that Singapore is NOT a country where no one has ever been shot or mugged or burglarized.

So you answered Laz' question incorrectly. You are wrong, sir.

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

You could probably carry the DE with a shoulder holster...You'd be stuck wearing a jacket all of the time, even in the summer, though.

What I actually said in my first post in this thread was "It would be great to be able to live in a country where it's possible to enjoy the freedom of being able to go out unarmed, without fear of being mugged or shot. Believe it or not, such countries DO exist." I think that's still true. The shooting incident you identified was a contract killing. As a law abiding tourist, I think I'm unlikely to be the victim of a contract killing, as I walk from my hotel to the Raffles Centre, for example.

But you are right too! Your document states
Quote
One contract murder with a handgun occurred during 2006, but edged-weapons are the weapons of choice for serious attackers due to the unavailability of firearms.

So ONE person was shot in 2006. Oh damn, guess that blows my theory clean out of the water then! :lol

The document continues

As I'm not Singaporean, I would not become involved in any of these attacks.

Using your source, I checked out Qatar and Oman. I could find nothing relating to shootings in either of these countries.

What I did note about Oman was that four people were killed as a result of heavy rains and the concomitant flooding. People should be more care to avoid drowning. Even when it's not raining, swimming pools can be dangerous!

fstfwd...  you missed the point entirely... singapore people need guns they just don't know it.

There are bad people there who would cut or strangle or mug or rape or burglarize em...   A gun would prevent those things from happening.

your country has draconian gun laws too tho.    the murder rate has never gone down but the victims of crime has gone up... you are more likely to be a victim of a violent crime in the uk than the US.

You are fooling yourself or.. you are justifiying.

The main thing is that people have the right to defend themselves and... there are bad people everywhere.   The best way for normal people to defend against bad people is with guns.

If you don't like bad people to have guns then pass strong laws against using a gun in a crime.   I could get a handgun in your country in a week tops.  It is not that they are not available...it is because of the absurd penalties for having one that I would not.

your criminals are just more wussie than most.

LOL Lazs! You brighten up my days. :D

A couple of things you should know about Singapore. 1) If a gun is used in a crime, the penalty is a mandatory jail sentence. 2) If the gun is actually fired, the penalty is a mandatory death sentence, whether or not anyone was hurt. (Other nearby countries like Malaysia have similar laws)

As for preventing muggings, rapes, burglaries etc., countries like Singapore/Malaysia have an excellent deterrent - the Rotan cane. Canings are administered in jail by muscular men. Part of the cane will have been soaked in water to make it slightly bendy. The end held by the caning officer will be kept dry and won't bend. Those caning officers know exactly how to make the cane whip around, inflicting the maximum pain. Apparently it hurts like all hell. One account I heard about a guy who received 15 strokes said that the pain was so bad he could not sit down for 4 months. The maximum is 24 strokes.

These caning punishments are reserved for offences such as the ones you described, in which someone has been personally violated. It's not used for crimes such as bank fraud or other white collar crime - just the nasty crimes committed by scumbags.

As a deterrent, I'd say it's far, FAR more effective than any gun.
