The wife was channel surfing last night just before I went to bed and caught this interview. Larry King questioning Bill Clinton about, among other things, the Virginia Tech shootings.
After the initial question of what his thoughts and emotions were when he first heard about the shootings, Larry got around to broaching the "gun control" question; leading Clinton to say the usual leftist comments about the failure of the gun control system and the need for changes.
But he got NONE of that from Clinton. Bill described how he had vetoed the gun-control bill calling for instant background checks two or three times because he preferred to have the three day waiting period with the background check. Clinton further stated that while some have concluded that the background check system had failed in the Virginia Tech incident, this was NOT the case.
The background check system worked as it was supposed to, said Clinton. IF the shooter had been properly identified by the mental health system then the background check would have flagged him, and he would have been unable to purchase his weapons.
Clinton ended with the statement that the Virginia Tech shootings resulted from a failure of the mental health system, not the gun control system.
Wow. I'm impressed. Rather than jump on the bandwagon with some of his fellow democrats and try to make this into a political issue, the former president took the high road, spoke the truth as he saw it.....and hit the nail on the head.
Regards, Shuckins
p.s. Whatcha bet this is given short shrift in the mainstream media....if it's even mentioned at all?
