Yak 9
« on: May 10, 2007, 01:15:56 AM »
Just been doing some reading. For those of us
who are Yak-9 enthusiasts, there were several versions
of the 9, one had 3 20mm cannons
one was able to carry 4 bombs, I think they were
250 lbs
there was also a long range version that carried
extra fuel and was used as a bomber escort.
That being said wouldn't it be nice if you
could pick the Yak for different missions. In other
words I would like to see those versions up.
    Regards all HenryL

There's only two.:huh  There's loads of Spits, 109's, Jugs, Hogs, etc...

I like the Yak because it's possible to do a lot with just a little ammo. I shoot Panzers in the a** with the 9T tater gun.

Yeap, one of the best things to do with that little bugger!  The Yak is very underrated in the game, especially the 9T.  It is fun to fly around and just use those 32 rounds of 37mm and see what you can get.  The 9U is fast and is a small target and turns very well.  And in the hands of a good stick they are very deadly.  I didn't ever really fly it till Trikky whooped me about 9 times while fly that thing.  Now, one of my personal favorite planes.

I don't think the 37mm round on the -T can penetrate any angle of the panzer's armor. It's not an Armor Piercing round.

If you have film of this anytime recently (in the past year or so) I'd very much like to see it.

I haven't.. not for a couple of years. Used to be able to, but they've changed so much code along the way that it doesn't seem possible lately.

Which is why I'd like to see a film if anybody has one.

I currently don't have films, but I will arrange it. I always approach Panzers from behind and hit the engine, smoking it, sometimes killing them, sometimes disabling them until someone else finishes them off.

I end up with the credit because of the most damage caused. FlaydONE, Jam934, and several others can verify this as well. Jam934 was a former BOP (Now an Angry Inch, I think). He's an avid GV-er, and used to get irritated at me for ending up with the kill after he finished off the enemy tank.

I'll fly a few recorded 9T sorties to illustrate my point.

The Yak is definitely a fun bird to fly.  I like the Yak running at high speed right down on the deck.  Also a fun plane to fly THROUGH hangars in the middle of a furball or vulch.

I've managed to turret, track, and smoke the engine on various tanks and osties with the 37mm.  It's not AP, but it's still a big round with some energy behind it.

Also, it's fun to drag the conga line of Splixteens, Runstangs, L-Gays, and Nik-dweebs through the country side on the deck.  One of the reasons I missed all the trees when the tiles were redone.  A small Yak running hard on the deck can be very difficult for noobs to hit, and I'd sometimes get proxy kills from augers or tree ack, or set them up for easy picks by friendlies.

You've got to be patient to run up kills in a Yak in one sortie.  Get in to knife fighting range, get a good sight picture, then let loose with a few cannon rounds.  Not a spray and pray ride.

In comparison with typical airplane guns, yes its quite powerfull. But in comparison with tank guns its weak, as a first approximation NS-37 more or less same as M8's 37mm gun. Did you manage to kill panzers with M8's 37mm HE rounds? :huh (i dont contend its impossible, but must be tricky the least).

Don't remember killing a tank by myself with a Yak-9T, but I've gotten the kill and many assists attacking them, while playing spotter plane for JABOs and other GVs to finish them off.

Not very realistic, but then we only have two AP cannon armed ground attack planes, and it's still just a game.

i didn't really kill a panzer with the 37mms HE. i was riding the M8 just for fun, when a teammate about 1.0k away from said there was a panzer near him and needed help. i ran to him and didn't see the panzer until it shot my teammate and saw the tracers. i kept firing at it's left track and until it titled. then i went to the back (he couldn't shoot me 'cause of tilted position) and kept blasting. i got his engine, until some noob shot his right track and "untilted" the panzer, he blast me.:cry

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

It SHOULD be flown as a Alt/speed junkie funky monkey.
The best thing about the yak is at high speed the lil' beast can still cut and turn with the best of them.

The shape is hard to hit,and also allows for a very clean airframe.
One thing is has trouble with tho,is the acceleration because it lacks wep.
However if you keep her over 250 for most of the fighting, you should do alright.
The real trouble comes when the yak gets low and slow "this is a no duh to almost every plane"

Simply put, the only REAL downfall is the dog crap ammo loadout. "some may say the small fule also"
If it had even a bit more cowling ammo, i would fly it more than my ki-84.

Shame. ;)

"Edit" the yak is one of those planes that, if you make it home..you will be out of ammo, with maby a few minutes of fule left.
