The exterior views on bombers make up for all the gunners eyes, the C47 didn't have that.

If a higher plane approaches a buff (b17/lanc/c47, whatever), no amount of fighter protection will prevent the fighter from making one pass. You can be thick as fleas, all armed with Hblair's 'tater gun' or quad hispanos for that matter.

A C47's best defense is stealth. You don't want fighters near you.

The kill of a goon is immaterial - a ditch is just as good (better in some ways) than a kill so far as goons are concerned.
