There will be another Planes of Fame airshow this Saturday and Sunday (May 19th and May 20th) at Chino airport in Southern California. Tons of warbirds are going to be there including a formation of 3 P-38's!

Anybody planning on going?

If I heard right, those three 38's are the only flying ones in the world so far, including Skidoo, the one Flayd and I went to see. I'm not positive, but I think that's what the project manager for Glacier Girl said at the Warhawk Museum over here.

Should be the P38F Glacier Girl, P38J 23 Skidoo and a P38L painted in 9th AF markings with invasion stripes that recently flew after some serious restoration work.

Planes of Fame is an awesome museum. I went there several times back before I moved out of the LA area. If any of you folks are near that, it is definitely worth your while.

I'll be there on Saturday with my nephew, Aztec78. We'll be there pretty much all day.

I've been to about 4 or 5 of these airshows, and it is not an exaggeration to say that it is the BEST WWII Warbird airshow you will ever see in your life.

Heck, it's almost like an Aces High carnival!

Only 3 left that are airworthy. I'm going for sure.
The shirts look really cool too. Going to have to get me one of those.

I think there are more than 3 airworthy, however there are a couple of airworthy P-38s that just don't fly now. "Tangerine" the P-38 that is at Tillamook is airworthy, but has not been flown for a while. There was a P-38 at Evergreen that was airworthy when it arrived a few years ago. There are a couple of others in private hands that are or were recently airworthy.

A few years ago there were 6 airworthy and flying. The number airworthy and flying generally hovers around 5-7. There are a couple of long term projects going on. If you go over to the Warbird Resource website, you can surf around and find out where a lot of the known warbirds are and what their condition and status is.

The one that flew as Putt Putt Maru for a time is now in Florida and should be flying again in the near future. There is one locally here being restored to flight as well.

And of course the old "White Lightnin" is now with someone else and is being restored to flight. There are others that have been recovered and under restoration as well.

The flying 38 population should continue to grow in the not too distant future.

Glacier Girl is set to make the Atlantic Crossing this June too for Flying Legends 2007 in England.
