nVidia 6200 help
« on: May 29, 2007, 01:51:59 AM »
I got a nVidia 6200 about two months ago. It worked great untill a few weeks ago ever since then it looks like this. Some times my computer freezes up on the AH login screen. I'v reinstalled the drivers that came with the card a few times. I cant find anymore online. Some one said it might be over heating but I never let it get over 42 degrees. I took this screen shot then exited and looked at the GPU temperature, but it was still in the green. I still have my old nVidia geforce 4 and have to play AH and other games with it. Can anyone help me?

wow TK, that does look like a driver issue. That card isn't really a great card for gaming at any rate.

Not sure what to tell you....have you tried the 61.77 drivers (they are old drivers for the 5XXX series cards, but  they seem to be tickling my pea sized cranium for some reason)?

Is that a laptop by chance?

No its a old Dell 4800. That screen shot it the wrost its been.

I just tryed to get on AH and the "blue screen of death" poped up saying something about "nv4_disp". I think its a driver but I dont know what it does. I uninstalled all the drivers and then installed them again but its the same.

Here's what I would do in your place.

I'd download the latest drivers from nVidia (pick "Download Drivers" from their menu, select "Graphics driver", then "GeForce 6 series", then the OS you run):

http://www.nvidia.com

I have always used the latest nVidia drivers (from nVidia) on my Dell machines with OEM nVidia cards, and that has always worked well for me.  I have never used some crappy, out-of-date OEM version of the drivers.

Before you install the new drivers, go into "Add/Remove programs" and remove the current nVidia drivers.

Then I'd reboot and install the new drivers you just downloaded, then reboot again.

If that doesn't fix it, can you tell us if you have done any overclocking of your graphics card?

Texture corruption like that is normal down to graphics RAM failure or drivers.
Does it do it on anything else?

If you've unlocked the piplines in that card, or overclocked it put it back to stock values.

I'd say you have a faulty RAM chip on the card then.

Then don't sweat it.

The 6200 is a low-end card. Does yours have a fan on it, or just a heatsink?

You can try opening the case and placing a fan near the side, or putting an internal fan near the heatsink to test if it really is overheating (with a buggy temp sensor) or if it's something else.

I think that reinstalling drivers should fix it if it's a driver issue.

If not, the card is defective and you might look into getting it replaced (if under warranty)

Yes it has a little fan on it. I bought it off ebay for $60 so its not a big deal if its broke. Just rather see if I can fix it before buying another one.:aok

40MB on dialup takes forever but I only have about 30mins to go to see if its just the drivers.

Did you get it from a store on e-bay? Or was it in a factory-sealed box?

After 2 months that's a manufacturer's defect. You might try contacting customer support on the nvidia USA webpage (if you can find a 1-800 number or something) and see if they have any suggestions, and/or if they will replace it.

If it was used, you're out of luck, as you have no idea how badly the person before you OCed it or abused it. If it was new you have some options.

Even if you get a stronger card, you're still out $60. Might as well see about getting your money's worth

I got it from someone that was selling a few of them. It was still in its plastic wrap when I got it. My old card still runs AH pretty good I jsut have to tone down the detail abit. I might just save up and get a better one.

I found the box it came in. It is the nvidia 6200 box with the chick on it. I bought it from "King butter Fung" "www.butterstore.com". I will look some more stuff up I do remember I said it was new so I will email him and see what I can do.
