Planes of Fame...
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:04:05 AM »
Anyone ever been to the Planes of Fame in Valle, AZ?

I am in process of moving cross country from Charleston, SC to San Diego, CA...I am in the Navy.  We are planning on going to the Grand Canyon tomorrow and on the way, I want to stop at the Planes of Fame museum....just wondering of anyone has any good info on it...is it worth it?

Thanks.

Sorry Killin', been to the G.C. several times, but never even heard of the Planes of Fame museum.  :(  Sounds like it'll be great!

Looking at it tad closer...only 36 planes in Valle, AZ  and there is over 120 in Chino, CA.

The one I really want to see is in Valle though...109G10!!  woowoo

P38 is in Chino though.:(

Guess I will make journey north to Chino from San Diego at some point then.:D

There's a Planes of Fame air museum in Chino, CA, which is the sister museum to the one in Valle, AZ.  I haven't been to the one in Valle, but I can definitely vouch for the one in Chino -- it is awesome.  An amazing selection of aircraft.

Since you are in the Navy, this might not be a treat for you, but for me it was great -- visiting the USS Midway in San Diego.  They did a great job of laying out a tour everywhere in the ship (engine room on up), and the flight deck is full of aircraft.  I spent 3 hours there and made it only 3/4 of the way though.

I'm taking a trip to LA this weekend and plan to visit Planes of Fame in Chino again.  Last time I was there, I saw, in addition to the more well-known WWII birds, a whole bunch of less-common ones and some very rare ones:  an Me 262, a Bearcat, a Tigercat, a Shusui, an Me 163, the world's only flyable Zero, an Airacobra, an A-20, an He 162, a Horten flying-wing glider, a Betty, a Raiden, and a Northrop flying wing.

The one in Arizona used to be located at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie Minnesota.  Bob Pond moved his collection to Arizona a few years back.

Should still have his B17G, B25, Spitfire XIV, Mustang, T-Bolt, some Cats and a few others worth seeing.

Killnu,

Once you get settled, look on line and make an appointment at Davis-Mothan to tour the bone yard (if you're interested).  I flew Helos for the Navy for a number of years and had the opportunity to set up a time to tour the bone yard.  Spent nerly 3 hours walking among everything from grumman gooses to B-52 relics.

I think it's only open to military folk as it is embedded on the base.

Just a thought.

killnu,

I've been there. It's a 1/2 day (or less) musueum, but worth it for the 109. I did the same thing - stopped on the way back to Phoenix from the Grand Canyon. Wife made me stop for some cliff dwellings, which was a fair deal.
