Carswell was an active duty Air Force base when I was there, had a slew of B-52Ds.  All Air Force pilots are officers. All Air Force officers have a minimum 4 year college degree. That's a good place to start if you haven't yet.

I was a 3 star from 1978 to 1984, 3 star private that is;) in the Irish army reserve. I really wanted a career in the military as a pilot but achieved the dubious distinction of being turned down by five air arms of three countries. Ireland, Britain and the US for strictly bureaucratic reasons which had nothing to do with my abilities or otherwise as a pilot or military officer. What I should have done was enlist like a couple of my friends did and use the money saved by serving overseas to fund my flight training.

It remains my biggest regret that I never was full time or had a career in the military. The reserves were fun, but it's not the same. In the end I left that because my civilian boss wouldn't give me time off to train as an NCO and you can't be a private forever.

early 75- trade training RAF Brize Norton
75-76  RAF Lyneham
76-79  RAF Northolt
79-80  Belize   6 month detachment
80-late 80 back to RAF Northolt

Finally out in 89 on a compassionate discharge, and all I can say is that it was the time of my life but I wouldn;t trade my life now for it.

Since my memory has been stirred in regards to the B52 D model I'd like to express my indignation at the exclusion of an ejection seat for the tail gunner. Every other seat in that beautiful beast offered an easy and quick means of exit to the officer occupying it. The poor enlisted puke in the back had to fire the explosive bolts securing that four 50 cal gun pod and then crawl through the hole it left behind. That's just indignant if not outright insulting.   ;)

I think I've watched the three loudest planes made takeoff though I have trouble choosing the loudest. A fully fuel ladened KC-135 rolling out on a cloudy day pierces yer soul. A pair of F-111s in full afterburner rattles yer teeth. An SR-71 rumble shakes the ground beneath yer feet. Can't say fer sure which is the loudest but the SR-71 had the greatest gooseflesh factor.

When I saw F-111's taking off while TDY to Nellis AFB, I swear I could feel the vibrations in the ground over a mile a way. I've seen KC-135 tankers take off while stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB.....F-111 is definately louder imo.
