Who are the most memorable squads?

The first squad I flew with way back (many beers and years ago) was the Warthogs in AW when it was free on AOL. Later the Motley Aces then MAW and then KO and I started the 68th and the squad is still flying strong today!!

flew FR arena, flew P38s, and some others I think from the Nomad's flew with them as well........

another squad that came along somewhere in that 95/96 time was the Skulls...um Whels, Pancake, runway, Bama, Egger ( some of the Damned members had helped join up and form this squad then split away ),  and formed another squd well Bama and Egger did......

have not seen or heard from Bama in a long time,

whels went  to the ACCS then he was in the MOL here, then finally joined us in the Damned......

Snowman had formed the Eagles squadrons  for FR & RR with CrazyHorse COing the RR division and  Snowman COing the FR squad ( was 3 squads total as one  )

remeber Lace,  have not seen or heard from her in years........ nor have seen our Damned Kanth around in a long time, or Sassie....or Sally.....used to be a good bit of women/female players....... anyone remeber Mutha or Dana ??? ( Mutha and Dana were not female players btw.just some very good flyers )

you all know we could talk about his subject for years and never get it all down on paper......

Don't forget Homer :)  He was with the Skulls.  That was my first squad in 96 prior to forming the Nomads.  Mav was the CO then.  Homer, Cakes, Trap, Shiva etc.  They kind of splintered when some went to FR and many of us newbie types weren't ready for it.

Can't forget Subbie either.

As for the AOL days, the boards were part of the fun.  Great fun for the Nomads to keep Fidel and Homer busy as moderators :)

There was another moderator I remember too.  DaLemming :)

You guys are making me jealous. Only been around 3-4 years, and find myself wishing I was in the loop for all that community and camaraderie.

On the other hand, seeing how many of you guys remember flying 13 years ago...I now have a NEW excuse for dying!

Last I heard, Subbie sold her business and moved back to CA. She is livin' large. :)

I don't know about Homer, but Fidel didn't mod the boards. He did mod the arenas. For a long time, he was the only mod for AW.

I melted more that one credit card in those days. The highest bill I had was somewhere in the $400 range, but I had to pay $13/hr because GEnie was $6/hr and I had to call LD which was $7/hr. I dont have much (any) sympathy for folks who whine about "I pay my $16 I want this or that". I used to pay each hour what we pay for a whole month for AH.

I really hope this community can change back to what it used to be.

Being 18, but a bit odd by teenager standards, I agree 100%.
And I liked it better when I first started playing in Dec. '05 (admittedly not very long ago)

This is the Good Old Days!  The fun is still there, just different.

Back in the days of pay by the hour, I limited my flying to an hour for squad night, and an hour on the weekend.  This ended up being around $30 a month.  But back then, I filmed every flight, reviewed each flight and kept a log of every flight.  Since I couldn't afford flying all the time, I spent the time reviewing what I did, and discussing it on the message boards.

Today you can just keep playing untill your eyes bug out :)  I think my old habbits are one of the reasons I still fly.  I limit my time on-line, and review films.  But I do it so I will not get burnt out and I can enjoy the game for a long time to come.

I found my old log files, man it was fun reading these again :)

Gunner...

I know what you mean. I was limited to $75 per month. So, I did plane art and a hardcopy newsletter (Inspired by the Fubar newsletter). Heck, for me, the downfall of AW started when they dropped the fee from $6 per to $3. Flat rate made it even worse. There in lies the real problem with the 'community'. Back in the day, it was expense (there in exclusive) and because of the expense...people found other game related things to do. Many of those things enhanced the game for everyone.

Today, its pay your $15 per and spend your spare time pissing 'n' moaning about things like maps. Oh well, I guess that is progress. :D
