Ok, your flying a B17 and your engine catches fire, you have what 30 seconds to bail or you blow up, correct? I would like to beable to pull the Red extinguisher handle it shows in the cockpit and extinguish the fire. But Also the extinguisher could be damaged and not work and/or only work somtimes? Seeing as in WWII they were new and not as effective as they are today.

Any Thoughts?

Diving to put the fire out could be interesting if added. Do you have any info on extinguishers of the era? I would like to see some sort of option added for this.

I would like to see engine fires modeled in the first place! Right now we only have fuel tank fires (which are much rarer than an engine fire actually).......no fire extinguisher's gonna put that out, unless maybe you have a CO2 suppressant like oceanic oil tankers do......

But yeah engine fire and the fire extinguisher on aircraft that had them would be something nice to have. IMHO the only place this game is lagging is in the damage modeling. Right now we can only do three things to the engine, radiator leak, oil leak or kill it altogether. An engine fire would be a welcome addition.

I'm guessing when your engines catch fire you have a set amount of time to pull a one time use fire extinguisher? But if you don't catch the engine fire within that set amount of time you dead? If this is the case it would be a nice addition to the damage modeling.

Yeah, pretty much! You kill fuel supply and deploy your (one shot) extinguishing agent a few seconds later. Your engine is now unusable. If it extinguishes the fire, all you've lost is the engine, if you didn't catch it then now it continues smoldering and may burn through fuel lines, electrical wiring, hydraulic lines, control runs and pretty much anything in the engines vicinity. May eventually burn right through to the fuel tanks and then you do go BOOM!

Would be great if such a level of damage modeling could be implemented! Engine fire burnt the hydraulic pump, so no flaps and no gear. Maybe no flight controls?

"Right now we only have fuel tank fires"
Yeah thats what i thought, i didnt know if that was a fuel tank or engine fire... but sence you blow up that makes sence that it is fuel tank. Thats why i suggested the extinguisher thinking it was a engine fire.

Right now i do not have any info on the extinguishers from that era but im sure i could research it if needed.

Yes it would be one time use extinguisher, Also diving to try and put it out would be awsome, and risky... to fast of dive then pull up would result in loss of wings! lol

If anyone has seen the movie "Memphis Belle" you will see that they tryed to use extinguisher and it failed so they put it into a steep dive and put the fire out. (I relise its a movie but im sure they did things like that)

Also i imagine if your engine catches fire, even if you do succeed in putting the fire out, the engine is still toast, it just prevents the fire from buring your wing off, and buring into the fuel tank.

Yes fuel tank fires would be more rare then engine because the surface is either fabric or thin gauge aluminum and it would be hard to spark it?

Oh and not all planes would have this option... only the ones that really used it. i think only the bombers were the ones equipped with it, defenatly the B17s had it.

Any more suggestions or comments would be apreshiated.

If you can carry a fire extinguisher out on a bomber wing at 10,000ft and not fall off or die from lack of oxygen then you deserve to be able to put the fire out.

I hope this is tougue in cheek humor, but with the lack of smiley faces Im seriously wondering about Latrobe's concept of fire suppression systems in aircraft :)

The red button isn't an extinguisher, its a prop feather, but I would guess it could be used for that.

I doubt fire trucks would rush out with a battle in progress around them
