Need Technical Help Please
« on: July 10, 2007, 04:18:59 PM »
Ok, so I have had the 2 week trial for about three days know, and I am loving this game, it's my new addiction.  The problem is, whenever I'm online and I come across people they warp all over the place.  I have read the various threads about it on here and netaces, but I am still at a loss of what causes it and what to do to fix it.  I am so frustrated because I really can't play this game at all.

My ping is usually between 64-67 with occasional jumps to 78ish.  When I CAD and go to processes, i have about 57-58 things showing up.  I understand that that may cause issues.  When I go to net statues, my variance jumps all over the place.  Usually its like a like that is almost straight up, and then it platoes (wrong sp I know) for about and inch to a half inch and then comes down and does the same.  It does this above and below the red marker or the 0 point.  I have sbc dsl.  I ran i pingplotter thing and have packet loss and the 11 and 13 hop.  The most loss is at the 13.  When i ran it it started out at 100% loss and slowly worked down to 10 and then went back up to the 15-25 range.

I really have no idea what to do, and I would appreciate any help that gets me playing this game again.

If your Variance is bouncing around, then it is most likely caused by active programs running in the background.

A normal Windows XP system has around 19 to 21 programs/services running.

I'd get that process list knocked down some. AH2 runs 100% of your cpu cycles, if it has to share any cycles with other processes, it can easily cause warps.  No body can just give you a list of which processes you NEED, and which you don't, all computers are different . Go HERE to find out which are needed. Just type it in and read about it. Once you have a list of what you need and don't need, you have to turn the one you DON'T need off. One way is to set it up using the "Task Manager". Search the boards here, some one post how to do it once. Second way is to search for FSautostart. Its a great little program that is free. You can use it to set up a profile.

In the profile you can set it to turn off everything you DON'T want running in the process list. The really cool thing, is if you turn off the wrong thing, and your computer crashes, you just reboot and everything is back to the way it was.... IT MAKES NO PERMANENT CHANGES TO YOUR COMPUTER...

Also, it will defrag your RAM for you, then start the game. Once you close the game down, it will restart all those processes that you turned off for you.

The second thing I'd do is run a DXdiag, and post the first third of the report here to see if anyone can spot any conflict in your setup that may be giving you trouble.

The last thing, is post your pingplot here. Someone may be able to spot troble in that too.

Good luck !

Thanks for the help so far guys, I'll get some of those tests up a little latter.  Basketball/work in 5 min.

So you think that some of those extra processes could be causing my warps?

And can warps be caused by low frame rates?  I usually have a frame rate of 60-70 when i fly by myself and then when i get in a big furball it drops to about 25-45, usually around 30-35ish, depending.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Does this matter?

Under processes when AH2 is running,  for acehigh.exe or whatever it is, under the cpu coloum its 50 and under something called System Idle Process its 50 also, so im guessing that takes up a lot of the cpu's power.  FYI the system idle thing's username is under SYSTEM and mem usage is 28K.   Don't know if that is important or not.

Pingplotter results.

Under ICMP using Windows DLL

Ok, I don't know how to post the pictures, can someone tell me how.  But it looks like I have some packet loss with ICMP

And after a couple of seconds I have 100% packet loss on all hops when i run UDP and TPC.

I just installed the AMD dual core optimizer like 20 minutes ago.  No noticible differences so far.

to post a picture on here you need to host that picture at a website (i use PhotoBucket) go there set up an account (its free) and upload your picture there then copy the HTTP link on the right (should be bottom box) and when you go to post it here click the IMG buttion right above where you type and paste it in the window that pops up. that should get ya gonig with your pingplot :aok

The 6150LE video chip is an onboard video chip, if I recall.  It also does not have its own video RAM and requires the CPU to do most of the work.

This could effect the Variance.  The 6100 and 6200 video series from NVidia are extremely low end solutions.  You need to minimize the resources the game uses in order to get any consistent performance from these video chips.

In the "Video Settings" of the game, set the "Maximum Texture Size" to 256.  Try to keep the resolution at 1024x768.  If your computer has a 1GB of RAM, or more, and you are running Windows XP. then go ahead and check the "Preload textures to system RAM" option.

I would disable skins in the game. In the Options->Preferences->Graphic Options.  And uncheck the background download of skins in the hangar as well.

If you have had skins enabled, then remove the 'cache' and 'skins' folder in the Aces High II installation directory to ensure they do not get loaded again.

The 50% load shown in the Task Manager is a bug in the way the Task Manager deals with dual-core CPU's.  Ig nore it.  The more applicable number is at the bottom center of the 'Processes' tab.  It is the overall CPU usage.  When you think you computer is idle.  This number should bounce between 0 and 1 percent on a dual core system.  Absolutely no higher than that and it should be switching back and forth as regular as a heartbeat.

I think your right about the graphics card.  It came with the computer stock so i doubt its anything high end.  What graphics card would you suggest?

I'll try the other stuff you mentioned, and I'll keep an eye on the overall cpu usage and see what its doing.

Thanks kilz for that info, I'll have the pics up shortly once I figure it out.

And I am also on a LAN through a d-link router and have Norton Anti V. on.  Could either of those slow down packets and be a potential source of my high variance and my warping?

Norton anti-virus can really mess with game data packets and prevent the game from updating its config/settings files.  It is also a resource hog.

Do you know how I can completely turn it off and then be able to turn it back on when I'm done playing?  I've tried to manually go through and turn all of the stuff off but i don't think I'm getting it done.

Personally I'd get rid of Norton totally - uninstall it, use AVG or Avast instead (recommend AVG - which is free, updates regularly and has a much smaller footprint on your system).

AVG Download

Hopes this helps..

wurzel, do you think its absolutly essential to get rid of Norton, because the comp. is the rest of my families, and they be a little anal about getting rid of norton and say that it protects them and they well just say do it to your comp, but the problem is mine is three years old, I'm not sure if it would be able to run it at all.

Skuzzy, I was reading one of your posts

Right next to the total count is the CPU usage percentage. It should be bouncing like a heartbeat between 0 and 1 (maybe 2 on occasion) percent. If there is any deviation to this, then something is amiss. You can also start the game, minimize it, then check the game's CPU usage. It should be at 99 to 100%. Anything less, then something is amiss.

When AH is running and I minimize it and check the cpu usage its only 50-51%.  And I still have about 56 background processes.  I take it thats not good right? lol.  AH needs about a hundred percent cpu usage to run good?  Would cutting down the prcesses to about 19-21 bring the cpu usage for ah up to that number and do you think that would cut down my variance a lot?

Just my opinion fella, but Norton is the work of the devil....takes up too much system resource (memory), interferes too much with the working of the puter (processes etc). If its for the rest of the family as well, can see where they are coming from, but Norton, IMO, isnt the best out there.
