host connection lost
« on: July 10, 2007, 04:46:11 PM »
Okay... so. I had taken a break from AH for a week or so. (due to all the fricking lag my computer manages to muster up to annoy me) And then my friend called me to go camping up north with him for 4 days.

Anyway, I come back and my computer is slow as can be. It literally takes the internet 15 minutes to start. I start playing AH 2... and it takes about 10 minutes to load the screen that allows you to choose which arena you want.

Another 10 minutes pass as I load the MA, and POOF... I wait 10 minutes only to have HOST CONNECTION LOST.

So then I tried another arena, did the same thing. HOST CONNECTION LOST.

So now I think it's just a virus, I ask my sister what she did to my computer. And she said, it wasn't her, it was her friend.

God knows what her friend was doing on my computer. So I ran a virus scan...

50 viruses detected, I get rid of 'em. Try AH again, and it still says HOST CONNECTION LOST. I run ANOTHER virus scan... 53 viruses detected in just 15 minutes.

I told my friend this and he told me to get an anti-spyware thingy majig. So I did, scanned it... and it picked up nothing.

The third time I run the virus scan it finally picks up nothing. I try AH and BOOM! HOST CONNECTION LOST.

Is it just that my computer is dying? I am pretty sure that the viruses I keep getting arent the problem, they don't even pose a threat. It's not my internet connection. Because i can play other games online...

Please tell me how to fix this. I WANT TO PLAY AGAIN!

Computers dying... but from Spyware/Adware...

Everyone gets it at some point and it can freeze you up in game.
Best advise I ever got was to D/L the free ZoneAlarm/ZoneLabs program.
It has a game mode thats nice and worth upgrading to the full version.
Try it , you wont be disapointed... Oh... and tell your roomie to stop D/L'n porn!hehe..

First thought would be to completely uninstall and then re-install the game.

Turn off 'System Restore' - that's where the virus' hide and then 'respawn'.

Run 'Spybot Search and Destroy' - it's a free AS...just google it.  If you want to buy an AS try Xoftspy...I've used it for a year or more and it works well.

Also possible you could be dealing with a browser hijacker...though I'm not sure how that would effect AH.

Run 'msconfig' and check the 'start up' and 'services' section for suspicious looking entries and remove the check next to them (careful here, there are some things necessary to keep windows running!!).

Valuable Lesson:  put a password on your computer...took me a month to clean mine up after the nephews visited.

Run, in order:

Anti-Virus update
Anti-Spyware update
Anti-Virus
Anti Spyware
Disc clean-up
Scan Disc
Disc Defrag

Make sure your firewall is configured to allow AHII.

Check sysconfig/Start-up and make sure theres nothing funny auto-starting.  You might want to Google these items to be sure what they are.  Also uncheck any auto-updaters and just do it manaually from now on.

You should do all of this on a monthly basis if your computer gets used a lot.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

links for some anti-adware/spyware stuff would be nice... too lazy to search for it.

It would have taken less effort to search than repost here.

Go to http://www.downloads.com and get Ad-Aware SE.  It's free and easy to use.  Kills spys and adware.  Adware is a freakin pain and spy's ping off info making u warpy.

Get AVG anti virus from the same site or 2 or 3 different ones that are free.

Do a "disc cleanup" before anything making sure to CLEAR out "Temporary Internet file".  These buggers can still hold spies and other crap even after spy and virus checks.  click "my computer" then right click "local disk" then click properties click "Disk Cleanup" check temporary Internet files.

Run Ad-aware and get shot of all the crap then run an anti virus.

OK on same page disk cleanup is a tab called "Tools" click that then where it says "error checking" click the "check now" tab.  2 box's will then need to be checked.  It'll tell you you need to restart.  Do that and let it run.  Here's the pisser..........it can take a hour or it can take a day depending !  Nows the time to go round that slags house and give her a mouth full.....you'll feel better.

Once your back up and running disk defrag.... good luck and expect this thread to be moved:aok
