my floor mistakes
« on: July 10, 2007, 07:37:14 PM »
today i'm cleaning my floor with a drill/wire-brush attachment. laid stone tile down, didn't seal the dang thing before grouting it (who knew!). grout got into every little nook & cranny of the stone.

and i should have used the cake icing technique on the grout anyhow ~ just squeeze the line right into place & smooth instead of slapping it on there.

oh well. paying for my impatience now for sure.

taking a break (to breathe... dust is thick).

DO NOT give my sister that idea! If she puts power tools and cleaning together we are all doomed.

I know how you feel. I get impatient with a project now and again and find myself having to do it over.  Hate it when that happens.

Good luck and hope it doesn't take too long.

I think you just waited too long.  After spreading the grout you should be able to wipe the excess clean while it’s still wet.

Sealing is a must.   But, hey, at least you tried, and now know.

The good thing is that the floor looks incredible. Once I get it cleaned up, it's gonna be awesome. It's slate. :)

It's just the cleaning part that's a real booger. Using the drill kicked that dust up to the walls... and the curtains... and I tracked it all over the carpets.  Unbelievable. Guess I won't be on the game for a few days :D

Try using a large plastic dropcloth as a dustshield. Work underneath the dropcloth to block the dust from spreading. You could use a shopvac to suck up airborne particulate as well. Just keep the hose on the floor under the dropcloth. Be sure to wear eye protection, a dust mask and take frequent breaks.

go get some muriatic acid and dilute it 50%.  with a paint brush drop the solution onto the work.  it will dissolve the concrete based product rapidly.  keep a bucket of water and some baking soda nearby to neutralize the acid and to stop the reaction when you are satisfied.  you will need a good quality respirator make sure all the windows are open and run some fans.

all the best, and blame txdad.
