Take whatever Benny says about the P-38 and how to fly the P-38 with a very large grain of salt.
The only reason why he beat you while flying the L and you in the J was because he was the better pilot. It had nothing to do with the boosted ailerons on the P-38.
As for turn fighting with a Zeke, the P-38 can hang with it for about a turn or so, maybe 2 if the P-38 pilot is good enough. After that, the Zeke is going to be all over the P-38 in a turn fight, no matter the Lightning model or pilot skill.
If you do find yourself in a turn fight, the best place to be is on the deck and in a stall fight. You'll probably lose but if you throw in vertical maneuvers like stall loops, you may live long enough to get a quick snap deflection shot or get away. The P-38 has a better stall characteristics and isn't fighting torque and also has better acceleration and climb rate so you can almost disengage at will. It's best to use Energy tactics such as Boom and Zoom or one of the various Rope-A-Dopes when fighting the Zeke.
