Many of you have said the P38G can be a very good fighter in a turn fight against Zero's and others. What about the P38L?

No P-38 is good in a turn fight with a Zeke. The 38G is the lightest of the Lightnings, but it's still a pig.

from what i'm told, the 38G is the best in a slow turnfight....and i have been succesefull in it a couple of times. but ya need to remember...it has no wep, and isn't too fast.

now, in benny moore's 8 player room, i fought him me in a 38J him in an L....and he handed my but to me.......then explained why the L was better....with its boosted aielrons.......but if you're lookin to kill spits, an zekes....ya might not wanna turn with them...they both have significantly smaller turn radiuses than any of the 38's........i don't slow down with either of them anymore in the 38..........

You can kill any plane with the 38L u just have to be very good at knowing your plane and predicting what there going to do.

For example you can out climb a zero with a P38L.

It also accelerates faster than a zero.

It has basicly 2 of everything. And all of its guns are on the nose so aiming is very easy.

It has hydrolicly boosted ailerons so it turns very good at high speed. Beware tho it can compress.

FYI u HAVE to use flaps in a turning dogfight. Just stay right above the stalling speed.

I often get in a turning dogfight and realize i cant win so i raise my flaps and out run or out climb the enemy.

1)maybe i misjudged their E, but where i manage to climb till i'm hanging on flaps waiting till the bogie stalls below me, the zeke is ALWAYS right there shootin me

It also accelerates faster than a zero.

2)i'll have to try that.....i didn't think that much weight could........

It has basicly 2 of everything. And all of its guns are on the nose so aiming is very easy.

3) would you believe i find aiming with wing guns a bit easier? biggest advantage to nose guns to me, is if i have a bogie running, i can sometimes hit him at 1k, making him do things to dodge..which normally lets me get closer.......

It has hydrolicly boosted ailerons so it turns very good at high speed. Beware tho it can compress.

4)the boosted aielrons make a BIG difference

FYI u HAVE to use flaps in a turning dogfight. Just stay right above the stalling speed.

5)i've done ok with this in the G, but never in the J or L......if anyone can give pointers, or asistance?

I often get in a turning dogfight and realize i cant win so i raise my flaps and out run or out climb the enemy.
6)i got into a fight like that against a spit..i think it was a 9, but not really sure...he came at me with alt, i dodged, and got a quick snap on him..only light pings i saw though......but he stayed in the fight rather than goin back up....i was able to hold his 6, but without fail, just as i was managing to pull enough lead to fire, he semed to be able to gain some ground....we repeated this for about 2 minutes, and i noticed a buddy of his comming in.....so as we were comming round towards his base, he reversed the turn from left to right..i continued left till i was headed home, pulled up flaps, hit wep and ran very bravely!

Take whatever Benny says about the P-38 and how to fly the P-38 with a very large grain of salt.

The only reason why he beat you while flying the L and you in the J was because he was the better pilot.  It had nothing to do with the boosted ailerons on the P-38.

As for turn fighting with a Zeke, the P-38 can hang with it for about a turn or so, maybe 2 if the P-38 pilot is good enough.  After that, the Zeke is going to be all over the P-38 in a turn fight, no matter the Lightning model or pilot skill.

If you do find yourself in a turn fight, the best place to be is on the deck and in a stall fight.  You'll probably lose but if you throw in vertical maneuvers like stall loops, you may live long enough to get a quick snap deflection shot or get away.  The P-38 has a better stall characteristics and isn't fighting torque and also has better acceleration and climb rate so you can almost disengage at will.  It's best to use Energy tactics such as Boom and Zoom or one of the various Rope-A-Dopes when fighting the Zeke.

38G is a different animal then the 38L

I have no problem killing 38Ls with the G if the 38L driver makes the mistake of turning with the lighter G.

If he flies smart and uses his speed and climb, he can control the fight.

But the majority of players in the arenas don't fly to their strengths and get sucked into doing things they shouldn't against planes that can kill them if they fly the way that plane works best.

38G vs a Zero is the same thing.  If you get sucked into turning slow with a Zeke you are dead.  You can turn at higher speeds with him, but you have to avoid getting too slow.  Like any 38 vs the Zeke you use the speed and climb to control things.

That being said, I turn with Spits consistantly.  Had a 1 v 2 against 2 Spit 8s on the deck last night and augered one and shot down the other even though they bounced me.

You can turn with N1Ks, Ki-84s etc in the G as well.

Again I have to qualify that by saying a good stick in either of those birds will play it differently and the outcome can be different.

I havent flown tons this tour, but so far this average 38G stick is:

10-2 against Spit 16s
7-0 against Spit 8s
10-3 against N1Ks
3-1 against Ki-84s
6-1 against AM65bs

Anyone who flies with me will tell ya I'm below em to start and turning on the deck with em 99% of the time too.

well me, I like the the G better and according to drgonzo's flight stuff it is (turning wise) superior to the J or L, and I just like it better, BUT I also LOVE the P-47D-11, yes I am a jug man, and after looking in the flight comparisons I was shocked to discover the P-47D-11 is superior to the P-38G in all ways exept climb rate!  but anyway I say fly the 38G, I like it better anyway.

You know your a dweeb when you love flight sims so much, you believe you can do it better and go start your own flight sim company.
