How many here are "long-timers".
« Reply #315 on: January 27, 2008, 10:22:10 AM »
Started FS'ing around 1991-92 when I got into DOS Aces of Pacific, AOEurope, Red Baron...(256 Colors! Woohoo!). Anybody remember the very gamey Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe??  Played that too and had just about every expansion pack for that.

Got into Air Warrior 2 in the mid-90's and as my first attempt at online multiplayer flight sim/game. Stayed on a couple years maybe but was never really hardcore.

Joined up with AH in July 2003 and quietly been here ever since.  The first month I played with keyboard and touchpad on my laptop before I finally sprung for a joystick. My old thrustmaster had long since been dead.  Never any doubt in my mind that I'd continue after the 2 week free trial though...I was hooked the first day in.  I come and go now, so I'm not online a lot, but I do fly offline quite a bit still.  Love it, game or sim, whatever.

Ah yes, SWOTL.   I loved that game!  That one stayed on my computer longer than any of the boxed games.  I remember trying to reproduce the bombing mission from the movie "Memphis Belle" in SWOTL.  I agree, gamey, but I absolutely loved that game.  What was that, 1993 or something like that?

Started my first flight sim in 1982, - psion flight simulater on a Sinclair ZX81.
I later modded it to be a blind-flying bombing simulator.
First time H2H was in 1984, 2xSinclair Spectrums and a programme called Delta Wing. Hacked into it to work with a microdrive to load, so you could start the game on both computers in just 13 seconds. Modem was calld RS232.
First time online properly was MS-CFS Warbirds, then Airwarrior, then Dawn of Aces, then AH. That was in 2000.
Tried some other stuff later, noteably Il-2, but got stuck with AH. The best :aok
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Ok, I just realized there were 13 pages of posts...so I went back and checked out all the posters. These are the ones I remember. Brooke (loved your chats! we actually chatted on the phone for an hour once about ACM's and the best books & I still have Robert Shaws book)

Howdy!  I haven't kept up with this topic for a while, so I don't know if you are still reading this, but I hope you are around and tried out the game.  Aces High is great fun, and there are lots and lots of former AW folks here as you found.  I think you'd love it.  It does take a while to get your gunnery skills back up and going from the AW days.  You'll get your ACM back pretty quick -- it's just the aiming that takes longer. :)

Hehe, I recognize too many of those names. That was back in the days when Kelton still played. Heck, I just saw Airmigan 2 weeks ago. BTW, he is planning to come to the convention.

You should ramp it up. It's gettin' lonely round here.:)

I started AH in Feb of 2005.  First and only game I play online that I pay for.  Took me a while to give into paying for a game, but its worth it.  Its fun, relaxing and Ive made a lot of new friends. :aok

1213 miles one way to the Con....shouldn't have bought a friggin diesel. Hope you, Coach and all the other Damned fellas are well! Dok is still a dweeb.

Hi Mates

Started flight sims with Flight Simulator in the 80's.  Found War Birds in 1996 and flew there even after coming to AH Beta.  Finally went 100% in AH in 2001.  Tried WWIIOL as well, but could never find a niche in there.  Too many people.

Only squad mates left from WB and here are Ramjet occasionally, Sparow all the time, and a few others.

AH has totally changed from the Beta days.  Anyone remember taking off from fields with 10k altitude.  End over end in the B26 down the mountainside.  Hmmmm.  Those were the days.

Believe AH has something for everyone.  Basically a flight simulation, but has ground and Navy activities that others just don't have.

Has been a fun trip for me.

Cheers to everyone.
