Author Topic: Help. I deleted the display adapter!! (Read 421 times)

I scewed up. as i went to delete all the existing ATI vid drivers before installing the new onese, i have deleted the display adapter in the device manager. the last time i was able to start xp the installler said there is now hardware and the drivers cannot be installed. the 'scan for hardware changes" only detects the codex.
NOW as i rebooted , the pc won't show any image after the black window logo and the lil scrolling bar under it. i can hear windows load and work in the background but no image. I tried to boot in safe mode but it stops always at the loading of file Igogo.sys.!
I'm stuck. Before i start reparing windows with the cd .. do u have any idea how to reinstall the standard display adapter?
I really can't format
now using my laptop.

Hmmm maybe F8 at boot-up (while the little white progress indicator rolls in the bottom of the black screen) and choose VGA mode? You really have to press F8 at the right moment, VGA option doesn't show when it offers you safe mode after an incorrect shutdown.

Still stuck with the problem.

I've played with F8 the whole day yesterday but I haven't seen the VGA option. As I left the pc before losing the video, it was using a standard VGA. Isn't that the same?

I was thinking. If I can boot from my second drive and second version of XP, can't I change some registry and fix the missing display adapter on my main drive?
Just an idea.

From what you've described fella, it sounds like you've deleted all the windows standard vga drivers as well, as you should at least get a screen that allows you to view images etc. That way you could reinstall the required drivers for your card. If you use the 2nd drive and install, I'd have thought it would have the relevant drivers. You could then use the previous drive to copy everything that you want to keep across to what was previously your 2nd drive. Or....you could try running the repair console booting up from your (XP?) disk.......that could just install the vga drivers allowing you to have a screen which will allow you to install the right drivers (if that makes any sense)

XP repair disk has always, in my past, dameged the XP install and had to format everything.
Now, let's assume I have the second drive with XP on it. Which files should I replace, in the master drive, to have a sort of video? Which files or registry do I need to fix?
Any idea?

Errrm, actually, had a thought, if you boot up from the 2nd drive, you could copy the entire registry over............open regedit.exe (start>run>regedit) and export it to your desktop (or somewhere you can find it easily) then, copy it across to your other drive, making sure if it asks you to overwrite you say yes.........downside of this is, you will lose some data, as the drives wont be the same..............as I've no way of knowing whats on your drive(s) etc............actually, had another thought, you could sit there and go through the whole list of files when it says do you want to overwrite, and just say yes to the ones that refer to your video card.....which may well take some time.......once you've done that, you "should" have a driver to run your display at least....

download the video driver executable on to a USB drive. Use the Keyboard START > RUN command on you laptop and write down every step of what you have to do to run the drivers using the KEYBOARD ONLY.

Once you have perfected it on your laptop, stick the USB in your PC, and complete the same steps.

Just a thought.

That's actually a good idea but....before my last reboot with my vidoe working the drivers couldn't be installed because there was ( and still is ) no display adapter in the device manager and the AIT installer of the driver spits " there is no hardware installed in your system. the drivers will not be installed"
Did I screw up nicely or what?

Man, I so wasnt on the ball yesterday........if you copy your registry across, click yes to overwrite it, and when it says xxx file already exists, do you want to overwrite it, click no to all and it should only install the files you have missing..........hopefully that made sense.......

That's a good idea. I ordered a new vid card and I'll try that after replacing the files that get the safe mode stuck - JGOGO.sys.

RESOLUTION:

I ended up having to run the XP cd "Total-rebuild" not the repair but the second option " R" after passed the screen to install XP from scratch. That left all my programs and settings alone ( but some windows updates aren't working now ).

Any way I discovered that to reinstall the Display adapter in the control panel all I had to do was run the vid card CD installation drivers. Duh!

Another realization: The drivers and installater u download from ATI aren't the same as the ones form the cd. I had tried to use the installer with the 4.12 ( and others) and it wouldn't install anything but the CD worked. I tiried all the above aslo on a clean HD on the same PC.
