Bomber vs Bomber
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:54:15 PM »
I was just reminiscing about a bomber mission i was in a while a go - there were about 4 of us flying b-17's to bomb an airfield and on the way back we ran into a huge formation of enemy 17's coming to bomb our base.

They were below us so we dropped in amongst them and started blasting them from the turrets. It was great fun and i think it must have taken them a couple of minutes to realise what was happening because i downed several before they started firing back. It felt more like an historical ship battle than air combat - lumbering next to each other firing out of the side guns!

Didn't take too much longer before i got wasted but that was one of the most interesting and fun things i've had happen in this game. Just thought i'd share :)

I've always wanted that to happen when I'm flying a bomber, it sounds like alot of fun taking out bombers with bombers:)

There is an account of a B-17 vs He177 fight over the channel like that and a PBY vs H6K(I think) Japanese flying boat.  The Americans won in both cases.

I remember, by chance meeting 999000's Ki-67s in my B17's.  It was VERY fun battling, weaving in and out, and trying to move away from his tracers.

Needless to say, I lost, but it was all in good fun.

Karnak:

It happened during the Guadalcanal campaign. One of the Black Cat PBYs servicing the island came across an H8K flying boat just above the deck in the late evening. The PBY dove in from above and caught the Japanese plane totally unawares.

A few nights later another PBY attempted the same, although didn't fare nearly so well and got the worst of the exchange. The PBY managed to limp home (I THINK she was the personal transport of an admiral or general visiting the island) after which further PBY "night fighter" missions were terminated.

PBY Black Cats had some interesting stories. On one occasion a PBY found itself in a formation of Japanese fighters at night RTB. They did not realize it was an american plane, for it had its lights off.
The PBY then proceeded to bomb a port and a Japanese bomber nicknamed "Washing Machine Charlie" (due to it making passes over Guadacanal at night just to wake the pilots) was RTB and as the PBY was RTB. "Washing Machine Charlie" ended up getting shot down by the Japanese AA guns.

I recall a fight in the DA with schatzi and two other pilots. We agreed to only use the nose guns in B17s. I piloted the B17 and Schatzi gunned for me, same deal for the other 2 people. In the end me and schatzi killed the other B17.

I've had several firefights, mostly B26's vs. other types of bombers. It's definitely fun!

The Black Cats are a perfect example of why we need the PBY.

:D

I think you're thinking of PB4Y's.  The Navy version of the B-24 (kind of).  They used to run into Mavis flying boats on long-range patrols.

I remember a couple months ago me and a squaddi were going to bomb target in ki-67s and we wer on the deck.

Along the way we encountered a c47 getting ready to drop troops. I will say that was a crazy fight, the goony was trying his best to get way from us and out manuver us.

When I finally did land a hit it was to the cockpit and instant explosion.
