mid air collisions
« on: July 16, 2007, 10:07:54 PM »
now i know you all think this is another ""he collided with me whine"""

but it's not. i've been gettin curiousl lately.......in the arenas, there are collisions.....it has to happen, as we get too close to each other.

now go back to 1942.........me109's slicing through formations of hundreds of b17's and b24's. our guys in p51's and p47's, and later i think p38's trying to intercept them. now there's all kinds of fighting going on near the formations..........hans tryin to shoot down the bombers, joe tryin to stop hans, twisting turning..........so.......... ..wonder how frequent mid airs were in the reality of air combat?

please don't flame me for this.....its just an observation....

ya, i do...but i also used to read as much as i could find on the air wars of ww2 when i was in school(a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away)
back then it was just the beauty of the machinery, and the bravery of the men involved. never used to think of possible consequences of risky actions like htat when i was young......

Dont know about the frequency of collisions but here is an interesting one

The Piggyback WWII Miracle

"The amazing story of a World War II pilot whose B-17 bomber collided in mid-air with another B-17 and became locked to it in piggy-back fashion.
The pilot kept control to allow crew members to bail out then he and his co-pilot guided the crippled craft to a crash landing that destroyed both planes, but they survived with no major injuries! "

Just thought I would inform you that the P38 was there escorting bombers before the P51. As a matter of fact the P38 was the first allied escort fighter to fly over Berlin, a credit which is often given to the P51.

Collisions between bombers on night raids were (according to my father) more common than the RAF were prepared to admit.

During a night raid crews worried about this as much as any enemy action.

I got a question kinda related to this subject, does anyone know what determines who gets the collision message in AH?

Trax1, it's based purely upon whether your front end detects that your aircraft strikes another object.

(The next question is probably going to be "how come someone runs into me and I die and they don't", right?  If so, the answer is netlag - it takes a quarter second or so for your machine to receive the information about where their aircraft is (speed of light and host turnaround and all that), and a 1/4 second at 250 mph is a significant distance when one of you is trading paint! So on their system, the collision never happened.)
