Associate Jeeps with the Barracks, not the VH
« on: July 18, 2007, 10:43:10 AM »
Hi Guys,

One of the things I'd love to see done is to make the key to spawning Jeeps the barracks not the VH.

Small utility vehicles like Jeeps were ubiquitous on air bases and were generally used for personnel transport, they would generally be wherever troops where and not just in the motor pool. As such, I'd love to see them associated with the Barracks. If NME planes wanted to suppress them totally, they'd need to kill the barracks, not just the VH. It would also fix the problem of the totally "defenseless" base with little or nothing to strafe on the ground, and provide vulchers with plenty of easy strafing kills at the same time - a win-win situation. Nothing like having a bunch of jeeps scuttling about on the base for some strafing fun. Until we get some light and heavy MGs (the ubiguitous twin MG34 or twin Lewis AA mounts for instance) added to airfield ack, they'd also help fix that hole.

Just a thought.

Think of it this way: You wouldn't park the jeeps inside the bunk houses, would you?

Even if there were jeeps, they'd be in the motor pool, which is represented by the VH.

Even if you had troops to drive them, if the jeeps were blown up en masse (a bomb in a parking lot will ruin them all), the drivers can't do anything.

Having them tied to barracks will just allow too much abuse from the system, allowing dozens of them to spawn and rush the town to stop a base capture, even though the base takers took the time to kill the VH. Not to mention the fact that a dozen of them all together would make a damned effective AAA screen.

Also, with the absurd number of barracks on every field (something like 10, or 12, on a large airfield) they would never be disabled.

Interesting idea, but it just won't work. It's too much of a gimmicky way to stop base captures even after the VH has been killed. My $0.02.

I appreciate your points, but what I was trying to get at is the fact that a WW2 airfield (especially allied) was generally covered in men and "soft" vehicles and that they were generally not combat vehicles parked in a static Motor Pool waiting for NME GV attack. Most would be parked around base.

Also, if we have troops intact the idea of having them race off to defend the town against a troop drop isn't really so silly. What is silly is having troops who can do nothing to defend a base against NME attack themselves.

Ok if Jeeps are nixxed, how about the ability to spawn a man with a rifle or a submachine gun on the base? I don't think we'd complain much about the threat of troops running to the town at less than 5mph would we?

Perhaps I could interest you in a little MOHAA? Perhaps WW2OL?

I've played both, but much prefer AH2.

But seriously, as AH2 advances to TOD a little teeny, weeny bit of troop activity for the sake of realism wouldn't be a bad thing would it? Being able to spawn a soldier wouldn't unbalance the game the least bit, and while the .30, .45. and 9mm rounds would be gnat bites to a plane (with the exception of the rare magic BB), you'd at least get rid of the "silent" airfield with simulated troops cowering beneath their simulated bunks.
