I used to be a huge fan of NATO, but Canadians have been dying at a rate of something like 3 times greater than their NATO allies in Afghanistan for a while now.  Not such a huge fan.

Security! They benefit because if Russia decides it's in their strategic interest to invade one or two in order to protect them from themselves. They might as well lob missiles at Washington, London, Paris and Berlin because an attack on one is an attack on all.  

You don't honestly think Norway is protected by a few F16's do you? What if Sweden wanted Norway back? (An unlikely notion, it is true) Would you prefer to fight alone or with the USA etc on your side?
