I don't ever recall Robin Trower being in King Crimson.  He got his start in Procol Harum.

In my opinion....:)

Once in every great while God grants a person or persons to ability to be a "Perfect" band that will turn out "perfect" songs.

That being said Pink Floyd is one of those bands. I do think Gilmore is underated to a degree as well because anytime I have been around guys talking about guitar greats, everybody else is mentioned except Gilmore. When his name is thrown out then its either "oh yeah that dude...." Or " I have heard of him, but not real familiar with his stuff." Part of that being the way it is though was I think due to the fact that the members of Pink Floyd as a whole never drew alot of attention to themselves in their performances. They mostly wanted everybody else to enjoy the tunes and watch the light show and stuff.

I also think Lindsey Buckingham is also underrated. He's a fairly technical player. Not many people play their geeter like a banjo. He also has good sound out of his stuff. Nice full rich kinda stuff. Granted that is more a personal kinda prefrence thing.

Under rated..

Here's one.

Reb Beach, from the hair bands Winger and Whitesnake.

Not really know to be a shredder because of those bands, but he's actually got some really good grooves, and soloing ability.

Not a Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, or  Alex Scholnek, but really good none the less.

there is a whole global group of nobodies on youtube that could play any well known guitarist into the dirt.  Thats the trouble with being a really "capable, soulful, rocking or classical" musician of any sort.  There are just too many humans on board that are awsome.  It lowers the bar quite a bit.  I have not been impressed by anyone in years and I have seen/heard some truly great playing.  It (musicianship skill) just doesnt impress me anymore.

Can't believe none of you mentioned Ian Bairnson of The Alan Parsons Project.

I don't know of anyone else who has such a distinctive sound, I can always spot his work.

I made a mistake.   I apologize.   He was in Procol harem.

I'm only human.   Regardless, Trower is WELL-Known.

And I too will concede that Clapton played on "While My Guitar", but I would still leave George as one of the under rated tops.
