Anyone using the stock settings with IE is asking for trouble. It is quite trivial to make IE as secure as any other browser. None of them are 100% safe.
More importantly, even if you do not use IE, those settings still effect other applications in Windows. It is important to tighten them up or you are still asking for trouble.
I stated that to make a point as,while I usually try to refrain from saying "most". I think its a pretty safe bet to say that "most" people run IE at its stock settings.
Which is why I just for my own personal curiousity tested it that way.
Fact of the matter is I've never contracted a virus through firefox. Even at its stock settings
But as a rule I also dont run it at its stock settings either.
And I also use the "noscript" addon for it. Which is nice because if there is a site I want to be able to run scripts at with a simple click I can have the options of Temporarily allowing a specific site, Always allowing a specific site which there are a couple of sites I do that I know are safe.
Or always forbiding a site.
And I still find Firefox to be faster then IE
by about a 3rd
