"Civil rights advocates have decried the charges as unfairly harsh."

I'm sure they would.

However, just for once I would like to see it about how 6 students beat the snot out of another student. Not condoning what they did by any means.  But it always has to be about this color or that.  Quite honestly, I'm tired of it.  This is why I hate readin the news.  I just need to stick to the Sunday Classifieds and Comics.

DISCLAIMER:  This is not meant to get anyone riled up about race or anything, just my personal feelings on the matter.  If you feel you have to post a reply concerning about color, or anything having to do with racial "this or that", please hold your comments.

All I know is the cliché say : No way.

Yes, they can. One, there's Voir Dire. That's where lawyers do their best to weed out unsuitable jurors. Second, I'd suggest checking up on some recent demographics. Many parts of the south are very diverse.

edit: It's a race related crime appearently. Why no hate crime charges? Obviously, in America, only white people are racists.

What do civil rights have to do with this?  Oh, that's right.  This time it was the attempted murderers who were black, and only victim who was white.

No civil rights problems here.

The six black students were accused of beating and kicking Barker on Dec. 4. A motive for the attack was never established.

doesn't that reek of "hate crime" where punishments are supposed to be HIGHER than normal???

oh wait what the heck am I thinking, only white male heterosexuals are allowed to commit hate crimes, and there's no point ever trying to change that or understand it.
I don't know what to put here yet.

This was an interesting case, that, apparently, just got a whole lot less interesting with the reduction of charges.

Hate crime or not, the 6 kids, when originally charged, certainly had an 8th Amendment case when faced with 80 years for beating someone up.

It's hard to prove to me that it really was "attempted murder" when there are six of them, and the one guy still lives.

As for some of the more "out there" types asking for all charges to be dropped entirely...  Um, no.  If someone says something that gets you upset enough to inflict consequences on him, you'd better be willing to accept the ones that will soon be inflicted on you.

Shaw himself has dreams of attending Gramling State University. "Just drop all the charges and let us go on with our lives," the teenager told CNN Tuesday.

That's the best line from the article.

Maybe. I'd have to see the kids medical report. Contary to popular opinion, people are suprisingly difficult to beat to death (that's why you train chokes). The body is more like a vietnam era Huey.  Sometimes it'll absorb hundreds of rounds and some cannon fire and limp back to base totally mangled, but still flying. Sometimes a single AK round drops you out of the sky.
