I like flying the La5 and would love to see drops for it, rockets would be nice also but drops first.

Whilst the 2 cannon variant was by far the most common the 3 cannon variant was being shipped to front lines by feb 45 and saw service uptill the end of the GPW in Europe in May and on into Manchuria until August. The B-20's however had short and unreliable service lives often having to be replaced every 2nd sortie.

The wing was originally designed to take rockets and did when it formed part of the Lagg3 but there is no record of rockets being installed upon an La5, La5F, La5FN or La7.

Equally there is a picture of a Lagg3 with a metal drop tanks mounted on the bomb shackles but again no record of this on subsequent Lavochkins.

The bin capacity for the 3 x B20 was infact 170 rpg but the belt of 150 was more commonly used as the net weight was then the same as 2 x Shvak and 200 rpg.

There were a few La7's produced with 3 x shvak mounted cannon but these proved too heavy despite a reduction of ammo to 130 rpg.

And if I can produce a pic of a LA with drop tanks hanging off the wing?
I am sure I have one but am at a remote work site so it will have to wait for a couple weeks.

It was capable of carrying two 80 Liter drop tanks, it was also capable of carrying six rockets though the rockets weren't used much.  The LA is great for knocking AA down at a base and the rockets would give it a little extra.

The drop tanks would keep it in a fight longer so people would have less to complain about when it has to run away for lack of fuel.


I'd love to see this, i probably wouldn't use the rockets but the DT's i would.
When my P47d-40  and  P38J/L won't cut it, i turn to the LA. I don't HO, I don't ram and run, i get into decent fights, i don't like the quick easy kills, and for anyone complainin about gettin HO'd, it's an amazing manuver called a turn, climb, split s or barrel roll, learn em.
put a mix of a barrel roll and a split S and your on their 6...learn how to beat the stuff before you complain about em.

I would be very interested in any picture you can produce showing drop tanks on the  wings of any Lavochkin.

Most authorative publication on the La7 I have read todate (other than original test reports) is by Milos Vestsik. A czech auther who has the benefit of Czech air force records dating back to the late 40's when they alone flew La5FN's and La7's (2 and 3 gun variants).

His publication on the La7  ISBN 80-902238-7-7 gives a warts and all analysis which is backed by the most authorative Bibliography I have seen todate and includes original construction notes from 45.

He has also written a very good book on the La5.

I will check it out but all the data I have seen says 150 for two and 130 for the third
