10X5"HVAR For P-51D's

P-51's had the option to carry 10 5-inch rockets, as long as they didn't carry bombs.

I think it'd be a nice ordnance option on the P-51.

Was it post war or was it ever used during the war?

The only time I've seen P-51's carry 10 x HVARs is during the Korean War.

I think, however, Mustang's were being tested with 8 x HVAR's in WWII, but I'm not sure if they were ever used operationally.

At any rate the 6 x HVAR setup was the most common.

Well, the configuration comes out of a P-51D POH dated during the war.  I don't know how often it was actually fitted on the aircraft, but it was a possible wartime configuration.  Furthermore, even though the P-51D was capable of carrying 2X1000lb bombs, it was never done operationally during the war due to the flight handling characteristics it created.  This configuration is in-game now.  In contrast, the 16X5" HVAR configuration for the P-47N was a post-war development, and thus, in my eyes, should not be available.

It sounds like options should be taken away then, not added.  The Tempest carried rockets post war too.  I have photos of Spit LF.IX/XVIs with four rockets, postwar.

I think we should stick to what was used operationally during the war.

Just my take on it.

Well, I don't know that the 10XHVAR configuration was never used.  I do know it was available.  The POH specifically mentions the 1000lb bombs as being an issue.  We'd need to do some research to find out how many times one or the other were or were not used.

Personally, if the configuration was available during the war, I think it should be available in game. \
