lets face it, we've all seen great dogfights on the video forum. i think its much more intense reading about it though, let the the reader get his own image of the battle. it also lets the reader know what the pilot was thinking durign the fight, making it much more personal. i'd like to dedicate this thread to greatest dogfights people have experienced, and hopefuly people will share thier experiences for others to read and learn from.
I'll start out:
For those of you who know me im a p38 fanatic. one day in the MA i was flying back and forth in my P38L from a friendly base to the enemy base where there was a decent fight taking place. Stayign above 14k i scanned for high targets cherry picking friendlies below. after scanning for about 3mins i spotted a lone spit roughly 13k. i watch him as i closed on him as he just cherry picked friendlies below in a dogfight of about 7 knights and 9 rooks. flying in with my back to the sun, i put my nose down to pick some airspeed and waited for the spit to come back up from a cherry pick. just as i got closer i realised it was a spit 16. again for those of you who know me.... know i REALY hate spits, specialy spixteen who cherry pick. knowing what my target was exactly, i lined up on the spit as he came up to the top of his climb. as i closed on the spit, all the hatred for the dweebs who fly nothign but the spixteen made my blood boil. i watch him loop over to go in for another pick. i rolled to the right 90 degrees and kicked in right rudder, settign my crosshairs just infront of his nose and let a 3 second busrt of .50's and 20mm hispanoes. i watched the tracer rounds hit home on the spits tail followed by two peices im guessing to be the evelvators, fall off. it must have been the elevators because the spit went into the dive and never came out.
with the hi spit dead, i started scanning for mroe targets and found 3 rooks chasing a knight along the coast line. i cut my throttle and went into a dive, kickign heavy right rudder and using left airleon to make my 38 do a sideways skid through the air almost, works great for diving in the 38, dotn build up too much e from the dive. i cam in behind the pack chaising the fellow knight and i lined up on the plane to the rear of the pact, another spit 16 (go figure...). i lined up on him from 400 out and let a busrt go that pinged his left wing. as soon as i pinged him he broke up and to the right and i follow for a second pourign lead into him as he went up. He exploded in a nasty fireball s i banked my fighter back to the left and got back in on the cons following the knight. next on the list was a p51d, firign wildy at the knight plane. i called on ranged for the knight to bank his plane left a little bit to get the pony to follow. he did and presented a beautiful shot on the pony's left wing. I pulled the rigger and .50's turned his left wing into swiss cheese and the spiraled down into the soup, hittign the water with big boom. 3 kills, one left. the last rook harrasing my fellow night was a lone 109-g6. the knight was bankign wildly avoiding the 109 who was less then 200 out from his 6. i closed on the 109 and lined up a shot... and just as i went to pull the trigger he broke hard to the left and went into a spiral climb to the left. i punched the throttle foreward and hit the WEP adn followed him up. i watched as my airspeed bled away, i could tell he was tryign to rope me so i got the idea to wiggle the wing s a bit to make it look like i was floundering. so i wiggle the stick a little bit as the p38 rocked from right to left and sure enough the 109 rolled over and made a pass on me. i dipped the nose down and to the left, barely avoiding 20mm's to the face (dirty rooks! *shakes fist*). i saw him comign around on my 6 and gettign ready to make another pass at me. i went into a shallow dive to get my speed back. we were at 7k so i baited him for a second, make it look like i was running, and he fell right for my trap. he dove in from 1k out and i went into a dive as well, waited till he closed to 600 feet, cut my throttle to idle, pulled up and kicked in hard right rudder and went into a barrel roll makign him over shoot, i pulled up the nose, kicked the WEP and went vertical with him again. this time though, he went into a loop. i dropped a notch of flaps and trimmed my elevator all the way forward and followed him through the loop, randomly firing my 50's at him, scoring hits on his nose and left wing. once we came back level again he banked hard to the right and i followed him, but before i had a chance to reverse back he had already rolled back to the left and got in on my 6. i dipped the nose to te left and cut throttle and went into a hard right turn. he followed the turn like i'd hoped so i dropped another 2 notch of flaps and gave the girl a little power as i kicked the rudder hard to left into a roll and then reversed back to the left, i saw him doing the same off my 5 oclock and when he turned into me i reversed back to right again and before i knew it, i was in a low speed, scissoring knife fight with a 109 in a 38. we were barely 400 feet off the deck so there was no room to nose down and run, so this was a fight to the end. i dropped the rest of the flaps and kicked her over to left again listening to the sounds of the 109's engine behind me and guns chattering movign fromt he left headphone to the right head phone. i looked behind me and saw him reversing back towards me again, so i banked to the right again but i pulled up and kicked in heavy left rudder and cuttign the throttle, buring a load of e, and finishing the roll, going back to the left watching as the 109 passed just feet above my cockpit and i rolled back in his direction, applyign heavy left rudder againt o keep my e down. i rolled right in behind him, cept for now he was scissoring to stay alive this time. zig zaging through the air, riding on the knife's edge of the minumum airspeed out A/C could sustain, one of use was bound to screw up eventualy, fortunalty for me, it was him. in the midst of the scissoring he popped full flaps and went up into a rollign scissors. Riding the WEP to stay with him in the climb i trimmed my elevators all the way up again, giving me the turnign advantage, my guns crosshairs began to inch closer to him with each roll. soon my patience paid off and i got the shot. i let a burst go, missing him but just barely, so i pulled back hard ont he stick, gettign more of a lead, and i just layed on the guns. i watched as my .50's and what was left of my 20mm's danced from one wingtip, to the cockpit, to the other wingtip. there was a pause and then i hear a BOOM! in front of me as i watched a fireball replaced what was once my deadly, but very worthy adversary. Low on fuel and with only 350 .50's and no more 20mm's left i pulled the flaps up and made a b-line for the closest knight base, landing 4 kills, worth a total of 17 perkies.
that fight was so intense, i caught myself holding my breath (literaly) at moments. afte rit was all said and done, i had to go smoke a cigarrette (kids, stay in school, and say no to drugs and cigarrettes) just to calm my nerves down. i remember givign the 109 driver a
but to this day i cant recall his name =(.
And thats my story. RAWR!!! FEAR THE 38 DWEEBS:mad:
