Greatest Engagements

I always have fun with the AA squad, all AA's. Yesterday we got a mission going in P-51D's. I think we had 8 people so we set wingmen and everything. We got over the target and found out that the enemy was higher than we thought, so we only got a 3K advantage rather than a 7K advantage. A great fight we had that day with many fights in one sortie.:aok

I posted this in 2001.  The mission I intercepted was two F4U-1Ds, three B-17Gs and one P-51D.  This was before bombers had foprmations, so each B-17 had its own pilot.  I still remember this fight, even six years later:

I took off of A1 on the isles map in a C.202 and started heading east, towards a big blip on the radar. I'm climbing out and the dots appear, they are at a higher altitude than I am. There are six dots, 3 in front and bit lower and really close together and 3 above and behind them. As I get closer the icons pop up and show them to be 3 B-17Gs in formation being escorted by 2 F4Us and 1 P-51D.

Now, I'm not stupid and I haven't got any plans to attack 3 B-17s in close formation in a C.202, but I think "Let's see if we can't have some fun with the escort fighters."

I slide in behind and about 5,000ft below the bombers and start climbing up their low sixes like I'm an idiot, but I'm only glancing at the bombers. Most of the time I'm watching the escorts.

Sure enough, all three of them peel off and come diving down to save their B-17s from my horrible, viscious C.202. I break turn out of their firing lanes and then the melee commences.

After a few turns I saddle up on the P-51D and riddle him with fire. I lit him up like a Christmas tree, he puts it a shallow dive and an F4U is beginning to look a bit too comfortable behind me so I break turn again. I never saw the P-51D again. He just kept on running.

Twisting and turning some more its clear these guys didn't learn from the Mustang's mistake and are deadset on underestimating my C.202. I line up on the first F4U and hold the trigger down like bullets are money and I'm a sailor on my last day of shore leave. This one breaks apart and tumbles into the sea. Death by a thousand cuts.

That seems to do the trick of snapping the other F4U back to reality and he realizes that I am going to kill him if he doesn't change tactics. Problem he has is that he is now much lower than I am, probably stalled trying to turn with me. I dive towards him as he trys to get some steam up and run. As I close to firing range he does a break turn to avoid my fire and I pull in on his tail. He's rolling and turning as best he can, but now he realizes that his F4U can't out acclerate my C.202 at these speeds and I'm too close for him to level out. He gets more and more desparate as my bursts fly around him, then he pulls it a bit too hard and does a lovely half spin and piroet into the ocean.

I decided that I had done enough and I was running a little low on fuel, so I proceeded to A1 and landed.

And that is an example of how not to escort bombers.

If they'd ignored me I would have broken off and gone elsewhere. If they'd ignored me and I'd actually been dumb enough to attack 3 B-17s from the low six in a C.202 I would have been shredded at no threat to the bombers.

Instead a single C.202 stripped a somewhat organized mission of its fighter cover because they insisted on getting a kill and underestimating the C.202. It does have guns you know.

The night Ack Ack was refering to was a nice fight. In that one run I turned , rolled, and stalled to kill a 109, Spit8, Spit16, and a Nik....

I was out of ammo 0 mg and 0 canon... turned for home on the deck. Looked up and saw a 205 rolling over to engage so I turn hard so he'd miss and miss he did... the fight was on... at least for him, I just wanted my Mommy. I called for assistance, Ack Ack and Dan were coming from the base about 3/4 sector away, Batfink was in his own rolling fight. I just continued to roll, slide, tumble and match the 205 maneuver for maneuver. I had my 38L hanging on the breeze when I watched out my 9 o'clock as the 205 floundered and planted in the dirt. Won't mention any names but I bet he was one ticked pilot (would have really been more so had he known I was bingo ammo) lol.  Made it back to base with no damage and 5 kills. Was all good fun to you all.

Sorry had to make a slight correction.  I don't want people believing those false reports and rumors of me flying on the deck.  I also request those that have films from that night to promptly delete them as well as they incorrectly show me on the deck and not at my stated 35,000ft.  I do have a reputation to uphold.

So I cherry picked him in return and two of his buddies.  As I attempted to cherry pick a 4th guy he fought back as I bounced his 6.  I barely survived this fight, even though i started out on his 6.

I had the greatest fight in a seafire that I will never forget.
It stated tring to defend a port with little con trying to take it, I kept landing kills and when to resupply. I got back up unbenouced to me was a mission on the way to take the port, just about eight guys, and only tow bish pilots with me, so very out numberd, there was the 110's a jug and couple of zeros.
I began my attack on the jug that was low, lined up and took him out. I looked oevr and there goes one of my teamates, two left he had two kills. came around and snuck a zero kill, two for me, the other bish is dead now so its two to one anfd there is only two zeros left.
I quicky got on the first one and imedietly got tracer fires, broke off and got some e. got away from that zero and merge again kil the first one. I had only 45 cannons left so the next shot had to be perfect. I caught up to him he wasat the port by then but caught his six and took out his rudder in one pass, lucky shot.

it was a lot of fun to be greatly out numberd and still land four kills in the end.

hey now, no need to call the p38 a bomber, even though there was a lvl bomber version created call the 'droop snoot'.  sure it can carry nearly the equivilent amount of ords of that of a b26, but when a 38 gets light and and switches to guns and starts scanning for a target you better hope you can run away or pray and hope you get lucky.

had another intersting battle last night.  chawks were havign squad night and we were attacking rooks, simply cause rook are dirty and need to be liberated from thier formerselves ( but thats nother story).  i forget the number of the base, but it was in the middle of the map along the rook/knight border.  i was 18k in my pony scannign for hi cons as usual.  i spot a dot on dar just north of me over a friendly base. i get there and see a spit16 sitting just above the cloud cover.  i was a little disappointed it was another dweeb spixteen, but hey it was a rook so i should have expected it:p.  i got over top and behind him and rolled in on him.  he saw me at about 800 out and rolled his plane to the right.  i anticipated the move and led him a little bit, gettign a few hits on  his tail.  then i shot up like a rocket and did a hi yo-yo you counter his turn.  not sure what happened after that, but i remember having full flaps out, elevator trim all the way forward, turning with that spit.  i got my guns on him and gave him about 150 rounds from each set of guns.  he went up ina  fireball.  with him dead i went to support the attack on the vbase to the south.  i got to 17k again and began scanning for targets.  i spotted none and went below the cloud cover to look for targets.  i saw a p38 and an f4u co-alt heading straight for me.  i pretended to be a nub and go head on with the both of them but i nose down and pulled up into a loop.  i dont know what happened to the f4u, afte rthe loop he just seem to disappear.  so it ws just me and the 38.  he wasnt a very experienced pilot from what i could tell.  he turned on the head on merge when i looped, bad move on his part.  i came outta the loops and saw him turning to the right just off my 3 oclock. so i pulled another hi yoyo and got in behind him and shredded his plane with my .50's.  all of the sudden i get check 6 calls from 3 different knights and i look behind me to see a spit 14 600 behind me and closing.  i kick the stick to the left and slam the right rudder all the way foreward, making him zoom right past me, but not before he took out my rudder.  he pulled up again for another pass so i turned to bait him into my trap.  still at 9k i had plenty of playign room.  i watch him as he began to dive in on me so i nosed down and went into a WEP dive in my pony.  when he got 600 out i cut the throttle and pulled up and into a large barrel roll. he cut his throttle tryign to stay with me, but couldnt and went up a bit to counter the barrel roll.  i followed him up and saw  him go inverted to come back down so i did the same.  next thing i know, we are in a rollign scissors manuver barely 100 feet off the deck.  im full flaps hanging on for dear life, waiting for the spits buddy to come pick me while im slow, but he never shows.  we go for another loop in the rollign scissors and im tryign to watch hima nd the ground at the same time.  i reach the top of my rolling scissors and then next thing i hear is a loud boom behind me.  i look back and the spit is gone, and i got a proxie :D .  i level otu and get my airspeed back up and pull my flaps up, began to head for home.  no sooner did i get to 300 mph, i look back and see a typh headed for me 5k out.  shot up and heading for home, against my better judement, i decided to engage the typhoon head on.  i close on him fast and i fire a short burst at him from 1000 out, scoring a few hits and i pulled up before i got in hhis 20mm hispano range.  he follows me up and we do about 4 loops i counted.  at the bottom of the first loop it hit me that typhoon's roll rate is horrible so i decided to scissor him, pulling into a left turn.  watching him, i reversed back and forth, denying him a shot.  i watch him as he pulled up into a loop after i got around on his 6, i couldnt follow him because i was barely maintianing 150 mph with full flaps.  i followed him as high as i could and rolled over into another rollign scissors manuver.  he tried to follow me, btu after the second loop of the rolling scissors i saw him auger, right into a group of trees.  i flew home with a big smile on my face, a spit14 and typh out manuvered by a pony missing a rudder, both proxies, plus two normal kills.  i dont know how i survived that fight but apparently someone was on my side :D to all who i fought wiht last night, it ws by far the most inentse night i have had in the game in the 9 months i have bene playing AH2.

that was a great fight, we pretty decidedly owned them for 20 mins :)  ak-ak made it home with 8 victories, the rest of us got a bag too, all this after i was sure we were all dead meat, turn fighting low n slow right next to the enemy base with spits and la7s coming out of our ear holes.
