No texture controls?
« on: October 03, 2007, 04:20:26 PM »
When I go to set video options both the options in "texture" section are gray so I cannot set them, Preload in system memory etc.

Running on Vista with latest NV drivers for GF7800GT

Should I be able to select these because as I recall I had them selected in XP and  the game worked with better FPS and shorter load times.

Depends on the amount of RAM in the computer.  With Vista, you would need 2GB of RAM.  With XP, you could get by with 1GB,

I have 2GB DDR (+2Gb virtual) and 7800GT has 256Mb memory.

Did a fresh install and noticed that for my GeForce 7800 that the feature flags in video8 file reads 3310 and the texture options can be selected and the on screen fps display gives 900Mb of Tex memory but the performance is occasionally jerky. The old file has Option flags at 2158 and the texture options are disabled and the on screen fps display reads 0Mb Tex memory.

According to old screen caps with XP the on screen fps display showed 118 Mb Tex memory and the performance was good. Updating the driver does not solve the problem so maybe it is just Vista which causes this...

It is just Vista, more than likely.  If you went from XP to Vista on the same hardware, you can definitely expect worse performance under Vista.  There is no way around it.  It is the nature of the beast.

Anyone claiming to get better performance going from XP to Vista simply hada bad installation of XP.  Logic dictates Vista will be slower than XP on the same hardware.

Skuzzy,

And did you once say that win 2k was better than xp because it had better memory management?  Just curious, i skinned down an xp dual boot install to run AH maybe I should have used the win 2k side?

Win2K has a better thread manager than XP or Vista.  Win2K and '2003 server' use the same thread manager.
