Deputy Sheriff Kills 6
« on: October 08, 2007, 03:31:45 AM »
An off-duty sheriff's deputy went on a shooting rampage at a home in northern Wisconsin early Sunday, killing three high school students and three recent graduates before authorities fatally shot him, officials said. Another victim was in critical condition.

The suspect was 20 years old and worked full-time as a Forest County deputy sheriff and part-time as a Crandon police officer, Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said. The deputy was not working at the time of the shooting, he said.

It wasn't immediately clear what the gunman's motive was, but the mother of a 14-year-old victim said the suspect may have been a jealous boyfriend. Three of the victims were Crandon High School students, said schools Superintendent Richard Peters. The other three had graduated from the high school within the past three years.

The sheriff did not release the deputy's name, but Peters identified him as Tyler Peterson, also a graduate of the 300-student high school.

"There is probably nobody in Crandon who is not affected by this," Peters said, adding that students would be especially affected. "They are going to wake up in shock and disbelief and a lot of pain."

One of the dead was 14-year-old Lindsey Stahl.

I don't understand how a 20 year old can be working as a LEO at all much less working in 2 departments simultaneously. It sure looks like they didn't screen this guy at all. I'm sure more info will come out later on. At least we don't have to store that arsewipe and let him use oxygen.

Mav I suspect you would go into immediate shock if you were to be in my county for any length of time. Believe me...it is amazing.

Wisconsin has very restrictive gun control laws.  You can carry open(on foot only) but in most parts of the State if you do, you will be arrested for disorderly conduct.  The voters of Wisconsin voted in a concealed weapons law.  The Governor  ignored the will of the people and vetoed it.

Cal law allows one to be a peace officer at 18, although most depts (in So Cal) wont accept an application until 20 1/2... since the hiring process can take 6 - 12 months.

I got hired just after turning 21, one of my co-workers who had been a cadet at the dept was hired on at 20 (and 9 months), most of the folks in my academy class were under 25.

The LA Sheriffs hire young since a 3-5 year stint working in a custody facility awaits them upon graduation and they wont see the streets for awhile. Generally Sheriffs depts are responsible for running the jails and or court security, so boot 20 year olds usually cut their their teeth working inside for a few years before earning a patrol assignment.

I don't know this particular Sheriffs dept policies, or if the same generalities apply, but a 20 year old Sheriff deputy might not be as uncommon as one would think.

Really? You mean these armed atrocities like Wisconsin, VA Tech, Columbine etc etc. are happening in other countries too, with the same regularity? I'm trying to think of one. Um... Iraq maybe, and maybe other cases where democracy has been dropped from an aircraft at 40,000ft but the parachute failed to deploy.

Ocean27, I can think of a couple of countries whose armed atrocities are carried out by the government or the military and not by the citizens who are probably unarmed. Im almost certain there are a few more, do those count??
