If you want to have some fun, and you like being a bargain shopper, do this: Canvas all the known Sporting goods' stores you know, whether they are local stores or chains like Big-5, and see how big a collection of Surplus military rifles you can buy for under $100. I'm keeping my eye open for some more variety at the moment.

The only military bolt gun I have is an Enfield. It's a never issued return from Australia. Getting all of the cosmolene off of it was real fun......

Great shooter and mild recoil even with the steel recoil pad.

I've found that if you take it out and run about 20 rounds through it as rapidly as you can, the heat will force alot of the cosmoline out of the stocks. You'll wanna have some rags handy when you do this...

Don't be sarcastic, getting the cosmoline off is actually a lot of fun.

My M91-30 was dark with the cosmoline, but the ones in the store now look almost sand-blasted. Really ruins the finish. I had to go through 4 boxes before I found one that looked decent.

As for Elk hunting, I need to practice up on 200 yard shots with the iron sights before I attempt that. Sure it's doable, but still need practice.

I saw the same gun the other day at Gander Mountain. $149, I thought about picking one up. I've got a $40 gift card from them because of the hassle the gave me when I picked up my .270.

I'm headed out to the one in Winchester, Va rght now, might just come back with one. I'll have to see if I find one I like.

I paid $89.99 at Big 5. It wasn't on sale (lists for $179), but I told them I'd buy it if it was. They tend to go for that if the sale is over recently or soon to be started.

Of course in CA I also need to pay for the background check, the trigger lock, and sales taxes....  sheesh.

Cosmoline is pretty easy to remove if you've got some undo-it-yourself skills. A metal trash can, old oven rack, a few 200w bulbs or a heat lamp, and lo! An Easy-Bake cosmoline oven. Works great to get all the slime out and it'll even bake the crap out of the wood. Tip: baking the stuff out in your kitchen oven is a great way to earn a divorce, a fire, or both.

Another route (if you and wiring don't get along) is to bag one of those hand-held steam cleaners. Don't buy one off an info-mercial; you'll prolly end up with another Wunder by Emerson. Try Lowe's or Home Depot. They don't clean kitchens or bathrooms worth spit, but they will heat up the cosmoline to the point it melts. Use a huge plastic storage bin ($12 at Wally World) to keep the gunk off your floors while you do it. This method is MESSY! Being heated steam it will swell the wood, so a light sanding is needed after the rifle cools.

Note: Cosmoline melts at temps above 120º and has a flashpoint of 360º. The oven (depending on the bulbs you use) will reach 140-175º range. The steam cleaner method will hit around 180º.

I'd follow the oven approach, with the changes listed in R. Ted Jeo's follow-up to the original article.

If you're enjoying old Ru firearms, you might want to try to get a hold of this. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_1895_7.62_Nagant_Revolver.html

Currently I'm trying to buy it. (paperwork costing more than revolver itself. ...)
