At least in AH speak.

Player would be a person who plays the game, be it strat, furballing and plays for the sake of flying the aircraft.  They might score high, but not a priority as gameplay is.  It is a short definition, because it is a general term, refering to many different types of players.  Thet are generally a good part of the community, both in numbers and personalilty.

Gamers seek out other ways such as manipulating score to give themselves high ranking with little effort, pork' n' auger to drop a target saving themselves time by not having to fly home.  Repeatedly suiciding a CV would be gaming. Flying to vulch without trying to take the field, gaming.  Spawn camping, gaming. Basically they are trying to game the game in any way to give themselves an advantage, without actually playing the game.

Generally players tend to see gamers as a bane of existence in the virtual skies of AH.  They tend to be younger in age, though not always.  Generally not interested in the history of aircraft.  Generally not good for the community as they add little or nothing to gameply, immersion, or community.

So, in the real world, I'm a gamer.

In AH, gamer is a bad word and wouldn't want to be called one.

To me, a player is someone who playes the game. Whether you fly fighters, bomb, capture bases, or GV. If you enjoy these things just for the sake of the "enjoyment", your a player. If they threw out the score board and you don't notice, your a player. You spend almost as much time talking about the "great fight" you had the other night, or how your squad got lucky and stole a base from a bunch of guys that were defending it, as you do actually doing these things.

A gamer is someone who will do anything to win, and by winning I mean posting scores. You capture bases because you need goonie points to boost your score, and you get mad when someone else troops beat yours in.  You bomb strat because they are easy to hit and you can rack up points quick, not because it will hinder the other team. You fly LAs and spit16's and do nothing but HO  because its easy and quickest way to win a fight. The only enjoyment for a gamer is to see his score go up each day.

What I was getting at when I said "gamer" is partly described above by Pluck and The Fugitive, although I disagree with some of his examples.

In reality yes... we are all gamers by the very fact we sit at computers "playing" a game.  It's not a flight sim in my mind because it's far to easy to actually fly but having said that even if it was a sim it would still be classed as a game.

Is it a game that's far to easy to "game" the game?  In some respects it very easy to "game" and some become seduced by it.  By that I mean they blur this aspect.  They would cry foul if their secret mission was given away but condone for instance, the sinking of a cv by any means possible or a "Rinse & Repeat" attitude.

So where do we draw the line?  What philosophy should or indeed does one use?

The end justify the means?
Is it really that important or does it degenerate game play?
Because I can I will?
Many things are not coded like gravity in or on a bomb bay.  "Rinse and repeat" isn't coded.  Is it ok to do these things or does it degenerate game play?
They do it so I will to?
Well bully for them but do we have to join in with these antic.  Would it be better to achieve by fair means or foul?

If everyone on every side did things the easy way we would choke the life outta this game.  It's easier to kill something than to bring it back to life.  It's even easier to say it's my 15 bucks,  nanana!

And a lousy trump card in a honest discussion too.  As a "gamey" quip to cheap seats it gets worked overtime too.

One man's player is another man's gamer.  What I mean is, say I take a fighter into a furball with little hope of living through it. The cherry picker would look down and say Im just gamey. Trying to get more total kills or something. Where I would look up at him and call him gamey because he doesnt want to get his hands dirty and risk having a death on his record.

I had a custom desk built with stick throttle trims mixture and prop controls in place similar to the P51 layout. I wish the mixture control was available in AH but the radio channels would be full of questions about why the plane cant go any higher than 11k. My point is that discerning the difference is a matter of opinion largely and all it would take is a small change in the game details and more or less gamers would be generated depending on your viewpoint.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

OK the Test Results are in....

A "Player" is one who has all the great looking chicks in his plane, boat, or tank.

A "Gamer" is one who bathes only on the 29th of February.

I agree AND disagree with you lynx... It is a flight sim in that the flight properties of MOST of the aircraft represented are close to accurate [you will stall a FW190 at 105 MPH] but with auto takeoff it is very easy to get airborne. For a player without real world flying experience, takeoffs and landings [which are the most difficult skills to master in any aircraft] would make the sky in the aces high world a lonely place.  The act of flying an airplane is relatively easy, but getting into the air and back on to the ground is NOT!
My own personal feeling is that if you "play" the game your score will take care of itself. I could care less what my score is... I don't get a discount off my subscription if I'm number 1! Also I like nothing better than to break up vulches and kill spawn campers [gamers]. I will spawn limitless times to kill a spawn camper just so he can't land his 43 kills in whatever Gv he's in and will troll B17s over a vulch, empty just to pick off 5 or 6 vulchers [err gamers]. :aok
