I need some help, my rear USB ports are not working neither are my mouse and keyboard plugins.
I have installed all the drivers and I am not sure of what to do next.
mobo Biostar P4M890-M7 SE
I am running win XP
1 gig of ram
celeron d 3.46 ghz
sapphire x1550 ati chipset
WD caviar 250 gig hd.

Any help would be apreciated

are they enabled in the BIOS?

if they have been working and now dont, i suspect bad ports, which means new MOBO. if this is a new setup, you may have to enable the ports in bios. if you are using usb mouse and keyboard there is probably a "usb mouse enable" selection in bios you wil have to enable.

Did you, by chance, have a system crash? If so, you may have been prompted to hit F1 for setup or F2 for default settings.
If I remember right, the default setting for this mobo disables the USB ports.
I am not familiar with the bios settings but you need to re-enable USB ports. Be careful as a wrong setting can turn your machine into a brick.

However, look for a setting like onboard usb support and change to enable.

NOT, I never got them working in the first place, I am using the front usb that I wired up. the back usb are the ones that are not working also the keyboard and mouse plug ins.

EDIT: I just checked the BIOS and it said that they were all enabled.

Is it possible that they could have been shorted out?

Possibly. I'm not familiar enough with your mobo but very oftem those ports are protected by little SMC fuses or a PolySwitch circuit that acts like a fuse.

I'm not familiar enough with Biostar mobos and their site doesn't have a online diagram for me to look at.
My suggestion would be to visit a forum that specializes in the Biostar board.

did you build this box from scratch?? if so pull the MOBO and RMA. my advice would be to stay away from biostar. go with asus, or gigabyte or abit.

Yes not I built this box from scratch, it is working well except for the I/O usb ports.

A PCI USB-2 board costs about $5 here in Moscow, should be even cheaper is so-called "free world". Under XP ordinary VIA USB board doesn't require any special drivers, so maybe buying one is a solution?

Before deciding if your on-board rear-end USB is broken - check your extender cables if you have any. About 50% of USB extender cables I see now - fail. I have lost data on a 200Gb external hard drive and several flash-drives due to faulty extenders.

For me 2007 = a Year of broken cables.
