I personally can't stand the stall buzzer, and probably would have quit AH if I couldn't get rid of it. Extremely annoying. So annoying as a matter of fact that I'm annoyed by seeing it referred to in this thread, and even more annoyed that I'm typing about it now.
I switched over to the "buffeting wind" sound file for the stall rather than the buzzer. Realistic? Doubt it, but I like it.
I also turned my flap sounds all the way up so I can hear when they move during a fight. ( I hear lots of flapping at my house...)
I turned my wind all the way up too. (My wife seems to think that has somehow affected the way it sounds when I "break" wind too, but that's a seperate subject...). I use the wind to tell me what speed I'm at. She uses it to alert the kids of a need to evacuate.
Realism? Real pilots use headsets to keep sounds OUT! We use them to pump sounds IN! Real pilots use headsets to LESSEN the sound of engines and all other external sounds. We use them to pump those sounds DIRECTLY INTO OUR NOGGINS!!!
For realism we should be turning down or eliminating ALL sounds except vox (and maybe that should be subject to random failure, un-intelligible squeals, and static) and a basic background drone, right?
We also use sounds to help us get a better understanding of our game-world, where in real life we would use our other senses as well. I don't see adjusting sounds as a "crutch", "cheat", or "handicap" any more than using Auto Trim, zoom views, icon types and distance, 30 second reloads, RTBing while pilot wounded without being subject to extreme pain, and fear of never seeing our friends and family again, etc, etc, etc...
