Bow Hunters

If theres a type of hunting I haven't done then I would have to think about it. Rifle, handgun, slug-gun, but my main love is the Bow. Ive taken so many critters, in so many places, I just dont much care if I kill anymore but I do love sitting out in the quiet woods with my bow.

I used to run dogs for upland but after I lost my vizsla I lost the heart to hunt without him. I have thousands of duck and goose decoys and have probably spent years looking up at blue skies for every one day of the "perfect storm" of waterfowl action. But...lol...thats what waterfowling is. Ive been to Africa several times, a trip every hunter should make. Most of all if you shoot bow.

Since I got hurt on the job many years ago I bow hunt exclusively from the ground. Trying to figure out that wise old dominant buck from ground level is a thrill nothing else can match.

I hope we can save hunting but Ive really been worried about it lately.

You buddy up to a deer in a bar, go wandering thru the brush with him and he'll do the hunting.

Here's what I would do.  Buy a cheap Biro and disassemble it.  Make a slot each end and bore a hole in the middle.  Attach an elastic band in the end slots then through the hole insert the ball point ink tube........a bow.

Now drive down to the super market and go to the meat section and fire ya little bow at as many packs of meat as you like.

OK...sorry man.  I don't really mean to put a downer on ya fun time and it's nothing personal but to me it ain't right.

I'll readily agree bow hunting is probably more skillful than telescopic rifles and blowing brains out all over the wilderness but there really isn't much need for it in the western world.  Yer.....OK there was a time.  There were large families and binding poverty.  Extra meat on the table and all that but if you ain't got the "need" why do it.  Pest control is all I can think of.

I won't even get into the facts of bad shots wounded prey etc.

In our western world we over produce food to the extend of destroying some of it.  We don't even give it to the third world.  Then we have artificial prising through quoter's and what not.  Oh .....blah blah the list goes on.

Guess I'm just trying to say there's plenty already producing without actually whacking.......... Bamby.:cry

Oh.   P.S  There's only one real bow...the long bow.  Compounds are for girls :p

here in the us there is a need to control the population of certain wild animals. ie.deer . hunting is one of the tools used to control overpopulation.

First, big game hunters generally dont go for head shots -- the head is small and moves around.  Second, a bow cant do 600 yards :). Third, have you ever tried hitting a 6 inch target at 600 yards with a 30 caliber rifle? With or without optics, it takes considerable skill.

The biggest deer ive ever killed was with a bow.  13 points..lacked 3.8 points in score from being a non-typical whitetail.  It ook me 3 days to actually find it...with my arrow still in him

Lynx apparently you dont get it. You dont understand conservation, the need to control animal herds, or the fact that if it wasnt for sporthunters there wouldnt be any wildlife surviving in this world or any land for it to survive on.

Hunter/sportsmen and woman in America saved the deer, the turkey, the waterfowl, the Elk, the bear, upland game, the list is endless. The Bambi crowd is always keen to judge us but if it was up to them there'd be nothing left. Their high morals end when it comes to schilling out their $$. And they forget these same morals when it comes to walking into McDonald's for cheeseburgers.

If you want to see somthing truly disgusting go down to your local slaughterhouse and see how that hamburger you had for dinner last night died. It just aint right to me.

But I wont judge you Lynx, you seem like a great guy. I guess you just dont know any different. And was never educated on conservation.

Have you ever seen a cattle farm or the like? Specifically for mass culling/production? I'd rather eat free-range game off my plate any day.

My favorites are moose t-bone & roast, deer chops and game pie (rabbit, duck and pheasant).

Good luck to all hunters!!

Hunters play a big part in conservation in the states. Tell you the truth the deer population has increased sense i was a kid. We have so much land that the only way we can keep nature in check is to hunt.

I was a diehard bowhunter until a few years ago.  Now I'm a diehard bowhunter on temporary leave.  I'll get back into it for sure, but I want to switch from right-handed to left, and don't want to shoot anymore until I get new equipment.

My prefered method of hunting is with my birds (falconry), followed by muzzleloading (.54 flintlock fullstock), followed by archery (longbows and recurves).  I hunt with a .270 too, but that's just "grocery shopping" in my eyes.

I've built a few bows, both self-bows and laminated bows.  I prefer the self-bows, but have better luck with the laminated bows.  I lose patience tillering the self-bows and usually wreck them.  I've been making my own arrows and other equipment for as long as I remember.  I even knap stone arrowheads (still can't compete with a caveman though...).  I've built several muzzleloaders from basic parts and plans.

Does that apply to everything?  Do you need to post here?  Need to play AH?  Watch TV? Heat or cool your house?  Make as much money as you do?

Is it ok to do anything without there being a need?

Fact is, you're responsible for countless animal deaths just by being alive.  Even if you don't eat meat.  Animals don't die of old age in the wild.  Death is a fact.  Not good, not bad, just a fact.  Death under normal circumstances is FAR from what we humans view as kind or humane in our idealistic bubble worlds.  For that matter, death is not even a requirement for an animal to be eaten.  It's often just a side-effect.  Not that it will change your opinion of course.  Some people want to hunt, and are fortunate enough to have that freedom.  Some want to, but can't.  Some prefer to pay others to do their killing.
