Lots of kids with guns at school then.   Were we safer then or now?

Trying to say you were safer then because you happened to have guns is like trying to say there weren't as many fatal car wrecks prior to seat belt's as there are today.

Before seat belts there were a lot less cars on the road than we have today, so trying to use a blanket statement like that is apples to oranges. More over it lacks commonsense and any real thought.

Much the same as trying to say because you may have carried a gun to school who knows how long ago and you were safer then.. So that must mean guns are safer.

Sorry but there are a whole host of reasons why people felt safer back in the day vs today. Number one reason would be population and integration of society of different cultures.

I have no idea how old you are but back in the day people used to know their neighbors. The parents knew the parents of the kids their kids went to school with. There wasn't 40 to 50 kids in a class room and teachers had a more personal relationship with their students.

There was much more trust, because there "could" be trust because others had more respect for each other. It had nothing to do with guns, that's just typical of smaller communities. Like America "used" to be in many places. Most places for the most part were somewhat isolated and did things their own way.

You wouldn't have been aloud to carry a gun to school in the Bronx for NRA class nor any any other other big city school even back in the day. Why is that? I thought guns made it all better and safer?

No it's the typical idea of as a population gets bigger and more cultures mix,  the fact is there is less and less community interaction on the personal level. So with that there is less trust given.

Has nothing to do with if you could carry a gun to school or not. Feeling safer in a community comes with knowing the community, not because of the threat that everyone else has a gun. If you have to carry a gun to feel safe, I really feel sorry for you.

I'm in no way a gun hater, I have a few and I support my 2nd amendment rights, but there damn sure is a time and a place for guns and a School damn sure isn't one of them.

I have nothing against gun safety class being taught in school, but guns in school today.. No way.

Crocket your analogy does not work because metal cages are inanimate objects, whereas criminals and armed, law abiding citizens aren't.

The means to defend yourself can come in any shape or form the mind can devise, including such a well-optimized one as guns.
And anyway you are both admiting guns are dangerous, but in the same post saying they are no guarantee of safety... They are by your own account lethal, and as such serve as amplifiers to the users' intent.  Gun legislature such as CC ensure only righteous intents are permitted, i.e. self defense in life or death situations.  Add to this the fact that more often than not the criminal will have the advantage if in the absence of an equalizer such as a firearm, and the math is pretty transparent.

You want to compare trust in neighbours but that is apples to oranges... Even cops whose duty and profession it is to protect people are insufficient (e.g. get there too late).
What are neighbours going to do?  Mellow out the criminals holding the victim at knife's edge with their good intentions?

He was talking about carrying a gun to school when he was a kid. That's what my post was replying to.

Nothing in my post talked about not being able to defend yourself. Nothing talked about criminals. It was just a post explaining why guns shouldn't be a loud at schools.

Not about what you can do else where.

It does apply.  If schools shouldn't have guns it's mostly because of kids' immaturity, not because kids are not deserving of the same right to self-defense as anyone else.  At and beyond adulthood, it doesn't apply anymore, e.g. in University campuses.
I reckon High School ought to qualify, but for the general numbskulledness of gun toter culture.

crockit...  where do you think I went to school?  there were 1600 students and there were fights every day.

If they didn't teach firearms safety and marksmanship in the bronx in my day then they were simply wrong... unless you are saying that city dwellers are subhuman with no morals?

My school was as big as many bronx schools.   People have not changed... The schools themselves have changed.. they teach that nothing is your fault.   morality has not changed...

go back to teaching the way it was done then... the same programs.. and you will have kids that read and write better and have better morals and no more school shootings.

That can't be done tho.. the public schools are lost causes.. decades of social engineering have made them a joke.. the kids don't learn and they take no responsibility.

by your flawed reasoning... the fact that kids can't pass 1950's or 60's exams today is because... because there are more of em?   do you see what I am getting at?  the programs have caused the problems.

as for seatbelts... drive some 50's and 60's cars... they were a lot more dangerous and.. the roads you had to drive on much worse.  Seatbelts would have helped more then than now.   the fact is tho that people were more individuals then... they would have never put up with that socialist seatbelt crap... it had to be jammed down our throats a little at a time.
