2nd-grader suspended for drawing of gun

Sat Oct 20, 4:41 PM ET

DENNIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A second-grader's drawing of a stick figure shooting a gun earned him a one-day school suspension.

Kyle Walker, 7, was suspended last week for violating Dennis Township Primary School's zero-tolerance policy on guns, the boy's mother, Shirley McDevitt, told The Press of Atlantic City.

Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child's parents complained about it to school officials, McDevitt said. Her son told her the drawing was of a water gun, she said.

A photocopy of the picture provided by McDevitt showed two stick figures with one pointing a crude-looking gun at the other, the newspaper said. What appeared to be the word "me" was written above the shooter, with another name scribbled above the other figure.

School officials declined to comment Friday. A message left at the superintendent's office Saturday was not returned.

Kyle drew other pictures, including a skateboarder, King Tut, a ghost, a tree and a Cyclops, the newspaper reported.

this country is going to Hell in a handbasket, I can't even keep up with what is PC allowed and PC denied.

people like the parents of "the other child" on the school bus need to have some common sense slapped the *&^% into them.
I don't know what to put here yet.

All 3 of my kids draw constantly. Most of their pictures include a multitude of guns. Thankfully they don't draw in school unless they're supposed to. :)

Round these parts I think it's more widely acceptable then everywhere else though.  A huge part of the community is made up of the soldiers from the local base, who are constantly rotating in & out of Iraq.

Our community really embraces those soldiers, and understand that those men & women are heroes in the eyes of even our youngest kids.  So when they see battle scenes or 'gun pictures' they don't automatically assume that the kid is going off the deep end & will end up a columbine follow-on.

With the massive amount of media saturation that goes on nowadays with the war going on I'm surprised this happened. How many kids see the news with their parents each night?

I was 10 years old when we went into Iraq the first time and I remember drawing some pretty wild stuff that would probably have gotten me expelled now. Who knew stick figures could be so powerful?

we are replacing a pool fence at a residence.  the existing fence was wooden and about thirty years old, completely rotted out and falling apart.  we have obtained all building permits.  as we began to demolish the existing structure the neighbor came out and had the working supervisor call me.  she is concerned that one of her kids might drown in the pool.  I explain to her that in order to replace the fence we must first take down the old fence (duh) and that in the process the pool would be exposed and that this was all legal.

she calls code enforcement.  a woman comes out and says that we must put up a temporary fence even though we have a permit issued to proceed as we were.

I set up a time to meet the woman code enforcement inspector, I explain that it will take just as long to put up a temporary fence as it would to erect the new permanent one.

she is having none of it so I go over her head and visit the building official in a few words he understands what we're doing and instructs us to proceed as we are (which we were anyway).

the code enforcement witch comes back out to the site wanting to know why I went over her head in a hands on her hip right pointy finger in my face sort of way.

I explained to her that since her emotions didn't allow her to process the information correctly I found someone who could (me in a be reasonable, see it my way smug attitude).

she counters with how will I feel if the lady next door's kid drowns in the pool?

I explained to her that if the toddler did have the misfortune of escaping from his doting mother and did drown in the pool that I carried sufficient insurance to cover that eventuality and that perhaps she should seek another line of work.

I had to help her pick her jaw up from the ground.

the save the children stupidity in this country is far beyond the pail at this point.

the funny thing is if the enforcement witch had not interfered in the first place the job would have been completed one day sooner thereby minimizing the exposure of the open pool.

And the ACLU remains deafeningly silent on the issue.

Whew.. I drew figures like that on more than one occasion. I also liked to draw fighters, which of F-16 was my favorite and the best drawn evil killer machines.

Though, I suppose they wouldn't have minded this kid drawing tanks, fighters or warships. Hand guns are bad mm'kay.

One of the ongoing comic strip style series of cartoons that one of kids draws is a battle between the hot dogs and the peas.  They're all armed with pistols, machine guns, drive tanks, fly choppers or planes, drop bombs, dig trenches, fortify for themselves elaborate bases (all of which are heavily armed), etc.  Totally creative & so fun and funny to read.  Who ever would have thought food was so fun?

*edit* oh, meant to add that drawing of handguns in respect to military scenes that children draw aren't bad.  Those handguns are quite commonly used in the military.

But if you're drawing a little gansta holding up the corner store w/a handgun ~ yeah, that would be bad.

Billy and Betty can't spell, add or read. Don't worry about that... .the key thing is to watch for stick figure drawings with stick figure guns.

THERE'S the true problem our educators face.

I actually won some sort of "art" award in 4th grade for the many scenes of battle I drew instead of doing my math homework. We even played cops and robbers and used what ever was handy as our trusty sidearms. What an evil generation we turned out to be.
