Long live penguins! Down with winblows!

Just got wifi going, flash is good, java is good. It's free, stable and desktop not only pretty, it is also functional.

Yea, but if you want to use your mouse thumb-button to go back while browsing, you have to write 6 lines of code, rotate the cylinders and tune the cam-shaft...

I've tried Linux many, many times over the years. I give it a go and then get frustrated when I can't get things that should be simple to configure without having to jump through hoops. I really hope they succeed because I like competition. When I can double-click an executable file to install a program in Linux, then it'll be ready for prime-time.

You might want to try this version then. It is installed as easy as winblows. The only major problem for me was getting my wifi working. I have one of those broadcom 43xx cards that are horrible...but it's working now.

I actually did try Ubuntu 7.10 last week. I started Firefox and then tried to use the thumb-button on the mouse to go back a page when browsing (a feature I can't live without) with no luck. I then read up on how to enable this feature and decided I didn't feel like writing many lines of code to enable this feature. It's the little things that make me happy I guess.

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

Oh, I'm surprised it doesn't have those commands build in. I only have three button mouse so I don't notice it.

All those plugins are quite nice but add no real value to working with the computer. All they do is bloat the Linux enviroment to windows-like proportions.

For marketing value they're great no doubt. Too bad no linux distro comes looking like that out of the box, you have to work a day looking for instructions, installing buggy drivers etc. to achieve those effects.

Quoted for truth, as the kids say.

On the other hand, my company's software runs ridiculously fast on Ubunto Server for reasons we haven't fully worked out yet, but whatever, Ubunto.

Actually it's very easy to install it. ATI drivers took me 3 clicks to install. Compiz required few lines in terminal....and that's it. And those special effects do not slow system down in any way. Gutsy-Compiz use about 3-400 ram...

At least with 6.10 Ubuntu the driver installation is pretty far from 3 clicks. I recall having to troubleshoot for an hour before I could get the .rpm install to work.

Same experience with beryl - having to do research through several websites, updating about 10 different library packages (through painstaking trial/error/ method) and then initiate it through command line.. I'd call that an absolute nightmare and a definate no-go for any casual user.

I'm sorry but as much as I'd like to say Linux works great it's pretty far from being user friendly the second you step out of the standard installation. The difference to windows is like using a prebuilt app (windows) to having to script one yourself (linux).

For you musicians out there...Ubuntu Studio 7.10.

I would have dropped XP long ago except for gaming.

Give PCLinux 2007 a whirl. You can either boot from a live cd or install from the same cd. Hardware detection is better than many distros including wireless. AH will run but not natively. I've used Cedega to get it running. Performance is degraded, kinda like going from XP to Vista but a little worse but still quite playable.

whoever manages to make linux be able to run windows games will make a buttload of money.

or eternal bragging rights & worship of the masses. Both are equally good.

IIRC there was a thread in the hardware section showing how to get AH running under Linux..........which was using a new (not as yet released) version of wine...........gotta admit, once XP is unsupported, I'm going open source..with all its associated digging, installing, getting etc.........

and Yknurd......thanks for that update...........definitely going to be useful...thanks man,
