Kind of surprised I haven't seen this brought up yet.

Stephen Colbert's serious joke, running for president as the Favorite Son of South Carolina.

I love the show, along with the Daily Show. I am in South Carolina, and this has been a subject of debate quite frequently. I of course thought it was halarious and took the time to print out the petition on Colbert08.org. I left it in my building for other residence to sign, hoping for just one as a laugh. I left the petition (which provides space for 20 signatures) in the lobby for one day, to my surprise it was full! Someone told me I should print out another because the first one filled up so fast. I took the time to mail it in.

I read an article discussing the facebook group "1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert" and  it said it was growing at the rate of 13 people every 3 seconds on average. For those of you unfamiliar with Facebook, it is the "MySpace" of college students. You can join facebook, but you must join a network. Networks are primarily Universities. You cannot view profiles of people who are not on your friend list or network. This drastically reduces the spam seen on MySpace.
On of the tools on facebook allows you to join Discussion Groups. No one really uses them as Discussion Groups. Basically someone creates a group with a title such as "When I was Your Age, Pluto Was a Planet." People read the title, laugh, and join the group. Some people comments on the discussion group but the majority of people do not.

Back on Topic, I myself am a member of the Facebook Group "1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert." At this point in time, there are 843,310 members. As soon as I hit the refresh key, there are 843,409 members. It is 2am EST. If I press refresh, then refresh again as soon as the page loads (on high speed internet), the group goes from 843,518 to 843,522 members.

Stephen Colbert is OBVIOUSLY popular with young voters (18-22). Could he have some sort of impact on the elections?

I personally do not feel he will win. I don't know where he stands on major issues (The real Colbert and not his persona) so I wouldn't consider voting for him until I did. However I do find it amazing how popular he is.

I am just curious what others think about all of this?

As compared to the other clowns that will be on the ballot, I'm guessing he'd be a reasonable choice.

i too am a member of 1000000 SfSC, i find it amusing how far comedy central has allowed the writers of the Colbert Report to go with his candidacy. i can only imagine how many strings they had to pull just to let him run on about an addiction to pain killers after his traumatic wrist injury.

i don't believe he will get elected, or even be eligible to vote( at least I am praying that the big wigs at Comedy Central wouldn't let him try to have an impact in something so serious as a presidential election) although i do hope that maybe a stunt like this may inspire some new people to get the idea to run for office cause the current options feel like choosing between arsenic or hemlock.

Did anyone catch his interview on Meet The Press? I have a feeling he may just win one of the SC primaries (he's running as both Democrat and Republican). You know he stole this bit from "Man of the Year".

Nothing wrong with an actor for top jobs..  so long as they are conservative actors.   lefty socialist like colbert never do well in politics... sure, they get a little surge from empty headed school kids and bitter old lefty queens but that is about it.

Colbert is going to have to be careful about pimping his run for office on his show or the FEC will be coming to visit.
