Kind of surprised I haven't seen this brought up yet.
Stephen Colbert's serious joke, running for president as the Favorite Son of South Carolina.
I love the show, along with the Daily Show. I am in South Carolina, and this has been a subject of debate quite frequently. I of course thought it was halarious and took the time to print out the petition on Colbert08.org. I left it in my building for other residence to sign, hoping for just one as a laugh. I left the petition (which provides space for 20 signatures) in the lobby for one day, to my surprise it was full! Someone told me I should print out another because the first one filled up so fast. I took the time to mail it in.
I read an article discussing the facebook group "1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert" and it said it was growing at the rate of 13 people every 3 seconds on average. For those of you unfamiliar with Facebook, it is the "MySpace" of college students. You can join facebook, but you must join a network. Networks are primarily Universities. You cannot view profiles of people who are not on your friend list or network. This drastically reduces the spam seen on MySpace.
On of the tools on facebook allows you to join Discussion Groups. No one really uses them as Discussion Groups. Basically someone creates a group with a title such as "When I was Your Age, Pluto Was a Planet." People read the title, laugh, and join the group. Some people comments on the discussion group but the majority of people do not.
Back on Topic, I myself am a member of the Facebook Group "1,000,000 Strong for Stephen T. Colbert." At this point in time, there are 843,310 members. As soon as I hit the refresh key, there are 843,409 members. It is 2am EST. If I press refresh, then refresh again as soon as the page loads (on high speed internet), the group goes from 843,518 to 843,522 members.

Stephen Colbert is OBVIOUSLY popular with young voters (18-22). Could he have some sort of impact on the elections?
I personally do not feel he will win. I don't know where he stands on major issues (The real Colbert and not his persona) so I wouldn't consider voting for him until I did. However I do find it amazing how popular he is.
http://www.2008presidentialpoll.com/ (yes, I realize polls are not to be trusted as a true representation of the population, too many factors)
I am just curious what others think about all of this?
