it doesn't seem it was so long ago that base capture was actually an integral part of the game within the then CT (now the AvA).

the first day I suscribed to this entertaining game I was recruited to JG3 by diablotx.  I don't know if it was because JG3 was hard up for members or if it was because I was in an FW190 but that is where I ended up.

JG3 was the premier LW squad in the CT and had a pretty rigid command structure which I didn't particularly care for but it was a good squad for a noob because there was scheduling for squad nights and also a training night.  one went from raw recruit to unskilled dweeb in a matter of weeks as opposed to months or in the case of players like karaya, eternity.  all in all a good and successful strategy if one aspires to have a competent squad.

JG3 staged missions every tuesday and thursday.  while these missions included terrorflieger and jagdflieger missions they also included more than our fair share of captures.  we became so adept at capturing bases that we were opposed by almost every player in the arena on our squad nights and still took as many bases as we wanted to.  almost every BoB map we would win operation seelowe by capturing english bases,  almost every post D-Day map we would push the yanks and limeys back to sea.

it annoyed the other members of the CT to no end when we would capture english bases.

as person who completely enjoys polemics of any manner those missions were fun to me at the time but the fact that it is so rediculously easy to capture bases soon led me to disdain base capture and hold in contempt those that do.

that is not saying that base capture could not be a good thing for the AvA.  it might be fun to have base capture upped to 20 or 30 troops and be able to combine air and ground forces in order to accomplish an objective.  the key should be that two guys could not capture a base.  it should be difficult to do so.

But seriously folks...

I've played in the MA enough to know that the only way to take a base in this game is to overwhelm it. 2 or 3 defenders can stop 20 attackers. Bases are taken by surprise or the whole place has to be shutdown and suppressed.

The expected AvA behaviors so often espoused by the regular population are at direct odds with the behaviors necessary to capture bases.

If you try to please everybody, you will please no one.

It doesn't matter what the AvA is. I will adapt and enjoy. It just can't be everything at the same time.

To play the way you say you do would require "special treatment".

To not have "special treatment" would require a change in practices.

Can't have it both ways.

I move we change the arena to accommodate. All in favor say Yay.

see this hook sticking out of my jaw? you might want to start reeling it in Kong ;)

On a serious note if we know they're coming in and what nights and times why not give it a shot and see where it goes? .02

I say fine.  JG54 will play opposing team when they are allied or a supportive role when they are axis.  how does that sound?

Like I said, I adapt to wherever I'm at and have fun. I don't really care, but the lack of consistency can be confusing. Do you also suggest that the admins continually keep adjusting the arena settings and login message? I know if the ack is left weak as it is now they won't have any ords or troops to do anything with (evil grin). Will that be cool? If JG54 wants a night of specific type of game play should everyone say ok and re-adjust to us? Do we make the "rules" on our night. There are only 7 nights what if 8 squads want their own night? I can keep going...

Maybe it's time to give in and make the AvA exactly like the Main with 2 countries and different planes, forget any other "cultural" differences. I still don't see it being any more populated than the EW.

The MAs are no more than a numbers game, more numbers - you win. If we start a base taking arena then the logical thing will be to join the side with the most numbers. As it is now there's nothing to win, just the fun of finding a good fight, so side balancing makes sense. So, whatever, I'll adjust.

I was under the belief that excessive field captures would pork the arena, having a map reset, with no new map appearing for play (?).

As far as squads coming in and populating the AvA.  All good.  I dont think the arena would degrade to just another Early war arena.  I think just the fact that everyone is flying country specific airplanes is a step above the main.  I think the type of folks who would gravitate towards a more full, but still "different" experience, would be glad for and work towards creating all the right, fun approaches to play.  Of course,...alas, I am an optimist.

it will and it has in the past.  if the war is won then the arena is tanked and a staffer must manually reset it.  since the staffers are all volunteers and are gainfully employed then it might be a day or two before the arena is made right again.
