Scared to death........Rattlesnake
« on: November 05, 2007, 09:38:23 PM »
Walked up on a 6ft rattlesnake today....VERY close to getting bit. FRIKIN thing was HUGE and as big around as my forearm.

I was going into the brush near the tee box on the golf course I play at to do the male thing and got with in 2 ft. of him. He had about 12 rattles and was HUGE.

Did I tell you it scared the watermelon out of me?

I backed up after the other guys (the pros) I was playing with came to where I was and made enough commotion it started to crawl off. I got pale and very weak kneed.

When I finally got my wits about me I almost puked. I was physically sick and shaking so bad I couldn't get the ball on the tee. When I got to the green after I hit my shot I was bet over with the dry heaves.

Biggest damn Rattlesnake I have seen in YEARS that wasn't behind a glass in the zoo or on display.

Still can't get the sight of that thing out of my head. I have seen some big rattlers in my days. A few that big. But never ever that close and me in a pair of short pants.

Scared chitless i was. And , I aint afraid to admit it either.

I was working up in the poconos, which is notorious for Timber Rattlesnakes.  Given that, with all the construction noise, we only ever saw one.

Anyway, we show up for work one day, and start to get everything in order ready to lay more courses of CMU.

Just as I start to turn over a mortar bin, I hear a loud buzzing sound.  Now, rattlesnakes don't make a baby rattle like noise you hear in the movies.  They make a loud fast buzzing.

The momentum of the bin flipped it over, and I swear to GOD I floated.  There was no less than 2 or 3 feet below the bottom of my shoes for a good 8 seconds.

As the bin got fully flipped over, there was no snake.  I look over, and my father is cleaning off dried mortar from the tools on the Bricks, perfectly imitating the sound of a rattlesnack rattle.  It was not intentional, just great comedic timing.

From then on for that day, I made sure to bang every hiding place 2-3 times before I flipped them over.

Huh Nope.....that is an idiot.

This is actually the 2nd one I've seen this year on the course. But the last one wasn't NEAR as big as the one today. Not even close.

Even the Pro said it was the biggest he has ever seen out there and probably the biggest he has ever seen period.

Yeah they were in the cart.....several yards away...and when you going to...well...you know...taking a club wasn't really on my mind.

I usually take one when I go help others looks for thier golf balls....but I just never thought of it in this case.

I didn't relieve myself either....I waited til I got to #16 (this happened near #12 tee) before I went to the bathroom.

ALWAYS carry a club with you when entering the rough.

Hey you walked away without injury.....count yourself very lucky.

I got nailed by one of those bastards when I was 17 years old. Myself and a couple of buddies went hikeing in the Witchita Mountains in SW Oklahoma. I stepped over a log and got nailed in the back of my left calf before the thing even made a sound. Sucker bit me right through my jeans.

My friend John had a .22 pistol with him and killed it, then him and my other friend Brian had to help me back to the truck about a 1/4 mile away were I had a snake bite kit in my tackle box. John cut the puncture wounds, inserted the probes and then tossed me in the passenger seat. It was a 30 mile drive back into town to the hospital. I think we made it in about 10-15 minutes.

By the time we got there my leg was swollen at least 2 times normal size and I was drifting in and out. They had to cut my pants off because they couldn't get the pants leg down over my leg it was so swollen. I had 2 IV's running with anti venom and who knows what else. Spent 2 days in the hospital and anouther week on crutches.

I hate snakes, will kill them on site, and that's why. I had an instructor at A School who had a Ball Python. He brought it into class one day and when he got about ten feet away from me with it I told him if he gets any closer I'm going to have a new belt because I would kill the thing right then and there. He thought I was joking until I pulled my pocket knife out. When I explained why I hated snakes he took it out and never brought it back.

Did you try to stay calm to keep the venom from spreading to quickly, or were you just scared out of your mind?  I know I would have been.
