new sys all messed up
« on: November 09, 2007, 08:33:35 AM »
went out and bought a dream comp, it is a nightmare for my older games.

I have a AMD 4800 dual core processor and 2 512mb geForce 6800 Gs cards configed for sli ... and my game now is mostly unplayable.

I have looked into the posted duo core fix, but i am lost. It seems like there are 2 methods, are they one or the other? i.e. do i need to do the regedit and the compatability, or can i just do the compatability?

Will the regedit impact the perdformance of my duo core for all apps or is this an AW only thing?

Do we know if there are issues with the most recent Nvidia drivers? I am forced to use the lates nvidia beta for my Neverwinter Nights to work. I have been running a world for 5 years and cannot stop that, but anyway, I am wondering if once i get the cpu issue resolved, am i facing a new challenge?

At this point, i may just be swapping my vid drivers when i want to switch games...

any thoughts are appreaciated.

Assuming this is WIndows XP, it is your choice on how to approach the problem.  One way might work, or it might take the other approach.

You can also ignore trying to fix it and simply run the game in "Windows 98/ME" compatibility mode, which forces the operating system to keep the game running on only one core.  Not the best performance solution as the game is natively multi-threaded, but it does work.

If you want more detail, I am happy to provide it.

thanks for the prompt response.

So i need to dl the hotfix and amd patch either way and then i choose if i wish to do the regedit fix or the properties compatablitiy mode fix?

I would gather from your post that the nvidia drivers I am using or my sli config is not causing an issue, but rather this isall related to my dual core. Is this true?

First problem to fix is the dual core issue.  After that, see what is left to do.

You cannot hurt anything by installing the hotfix and/or the AMD dual core fix.  They are both benign if your system does not need them.

I applied the duo core fix and the reg edit and the problems are mostly gone.

I still get some weird lines and 'flashes' when flying. not extrealy bad, but quite annoying..

Is there an issue with sli? I am using the beta version of nvidia driver. I guess i can reload the most current driver and see if that works, but i know it does not work for NWN... I would hate to have to swap drivers every time i want to switch games.

Have you tried forcing on vertical sync?

If you are running a dual video card SLI configuration, you need to make sure you have the Aces High II SLI profile NVidia created.

I went into the nvidia configuration and I saw that Aces High is in the list. i do not beleive I changed anything, but apparently i have. I now cannot run the game at all. when i start Aces High up, i get a black screen with a moving box that says 'sync out of range'...

any thoughts?

You selected a vertail sync rate the monitor cannot do.  If you are showing only the 'Plu N Play' monitor in the Monotr tab of the Advanced settings, then you need to install the INF file for the monitor so the correct refresh rates will be displayed.

well, that fixed it. Now everything seems to be working 'ok'.  I still get the few lines here and there and as long as i do not look at the sun, everything is good. on the views with the sun, my screen wigs out and is corupt, but returns to normal once i no longer look at the sun....
