also thinking of swapping out the 500 gig Hitachi HD for a WesternDigital 150 Gig raptor, and running this as WinXPpro, then setting other 2 160gig hitachi's as my RAID1 and running Vista,  using the WD 500 Gig external for backups, data storage, mp3s, movies etc......and partion it to have a backup of the WD Raptor 150 Gig, with rest of Ext HD for backing up purposes of 160 gig RAID setup, and as mentioned data storage......

now just waiting for the Christmasn Bonus ( or hoping I close the sell for the 2 new chruches we bidding on for HVAC )

any thoughts, suggestiosn?  really been wanting the 24" widescreen for my CAD work and drafting of HVAC on blueprints...am tired of scrolling so much

I know alot of people say the AM socket is going by the way, and strongly suggest using the core 2 Intels, but I feel this one will last me a long time for all my needs both work and play.......also we just had a complete office overhaul and with new Dell Core2Duo what ever PC's and 2 Xeon servers put in and they completely suck....I asked for a faster computer to do my drafting, and my ancient athlonXP 2800 I am using at home still smokes that DELL BS stuff they just installed.......

all comments / suggestions / greatly appreciated.....

I think going with the case and the Artic 5 and heatsink/Fan I picked ............I should have no worrys of anything running HOT at all.......

It says all that stuff about Crossfire in there; remember you need two video cards to utilize it.

Your PC is two and a half times the cost of my wishlist PC...yeesh... :D

Only question I have in AMD vs Intel right now. I'm hardcore AMD but built out a 6600 box...simply to much difference in performance. I dont think it really matters at all for AH but the core duo systems have alot more horsepower overall.

It matters a ton. The amount of work a flight sim puts through a CPU is insane. Sure, the graphics take quite a bit, but remember; your CPU is calculating flight physics. AH is CPU first, video second.

But all you need is 60 FPS at hi-res. As long as you can do that anything "extra" is just that....extra.

That is incorrect. FPS perception peters off at ~ 117fps.

guys,
been thru this before......people like Intel , People like AMD........

Intel seems to supposedly run cooler, Intel seems to supposedly run faster, then their are some who say the exact same for AMD..........there are fanboi's on each side of the fence. and there are test and claims that would make each side win out over the other.......

I like the concept of the 1 GIG  videocard, and the AMD 6000 X@ AMD chip being able to reach 3.4 ghz  with little effort.......... AMD6400 X2 is maxed out , lil room to do anything and cost more

the 24" monitor ( woot woot ) which is strongly needed for my work since my days and nights consist of sketching Mechanical / Plumbing / Structural Blue Prints along with multitude of other things

and the ability to use DirectX 10 in the future.......and possibility of adding an additional 1 gig vidcard if a desire arises...which who knows what might come down the pike......

only from experience here - using AMD processor computers  have always been of better response for me than the INTELs....... oh yeah and DELLs  are crappy..... company only buys DELL at work because of the kickback and discounts thru the National HVAC program ( just like our stinking NEXTEL phones that work 1/4 of the time )

as for the cost of this...alot of it is OVERKILL extra storage drives, hard drives, when a person could just grab a 500 gig HD and partition it to death...... but I want the ability to Hot Swap, and the ability to run both XPpro and Vista Ultimate ( still researching the Vista concept since it is new to me )

but I have built 5 stinking computers since this old crate I am using was put together from loaner parts from my squadmate Whels roughly 4 years ago in which it was mostly all used parts then.......I owe myself a new Computer, everyone else in the house or in the Family ( Mom / Dad included, plus a few in laws etc ) have gotten a new computer or one built by me for them.........so this is my turn.........

if you drop the vidcard and Monitor you find this thing to be not that all to expensive........

I fully understand the Core 2 Duo concept, I thought long and hard about going in that direction.....I know the ones our office just upgraded to are loaded down with GUNK by DELL, oue IT tech supposedly came in and did a good wipe up, the only way for me to get any 1/2 decent performance from my Office  Desktop PC is to  cancel out the server connection and work on files offline, but it is still slow, the chip in my new Office Desktop is an E6550 with 2 gig ram and 256 meg vid card....and its slower than  a plants leaf wilting......

and our McAffee Business suite software only makes matters worse......is a great product, but Boss had IT tech give me admin privs to all my departments PC's so I could go in and cancel stuff , delete junk, and try to max them out..........no offense but I swear sometimes I think certian IT tech / computer companys throw lil monkey wrenches in to peoples work servers , so they can come back once or twice a week for service calls ( read as to make money )

sorry for the long rant

appreciate any views / comments...........OZZ if I did add another vidcard down the road,  I would prob have to upgrade PSU to one that could handle Dual !gig cards with 2   6pin and 2 8pin  PCIE  vidcard plugs ( prob 800watt or higher too )

I barely run an unlocked nVidia 6800 on a 400W, if that's any comparison. I'd be more worried about the massive amount of hard drives; next to optical drives, they use the most power. Spinning several metal plates at 7200 RPM can be rough.

TC...

I've been pro AMD for the last decade. This was 1st intel box I've built since about 93. I still have my 1st AW build (AMD K6) sitting here somewhere. I've got acomdata and maxtor 500G externals with 4 HD's...

80G 10,000rpm for XP, 300G split for Vista/Lynux. 300G data drive and a 300G I use with Acronus for backups. Keep all my business stuff backed up to the acomdata and my laptop as well...

I have a Sceptre 37in 1080P monitor but its doing duty as bedroom TV right now. It doesnt fit real well in home office. Is absolutely great for doc viewing etc since its a native 1080P res.

I've got a 6600 and dont know how the 6550 matches up (all the renaming on both sides confuses me:)). Then again since its an OEM box its probably crap...although I've got a bunch of clients who use dell worksations for CAD and love them.

Of Course it's going by the way, that is because I just bought one:(

You did remind me of one thing. I have rebates I need to send.

Good luck on the bonus. (I get one two, a small one but I won't turn it down)
