It's always the Spitfire in regards to RAF aircraft.

from a tv program i watched on the battle britan the hurri had a kill ratio of 4 - 1 over the spit (mainly as the spit was fairly new so in limated numbers  and had manufacturing problems.spit was hard to build compared to the hurri). the reason they gave that the spit was the uber fighter was looks (propaganda) the spit looks so good compared to other fighters and the public took it to heart more than any other plane.

personaly the only other ww2 plane's that look "good" is the p-51 and mossie. both of these planes took the publics heart.

I would have to say around the world.............P51 mustang. I had no tv and no movies growing up and I still heard how the pony kicked butt in the war, and I have lived all over. Followed by the spitfire.

This is kinda a hijack, but lets be very clear on this, the Spitfire, overhyped or not, was a significantly better fighter than the Hurricane. Those of you claiming otherwise need to do more research.

Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only
need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the
WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

P-51s never grabbed the limelight outside of the United States that I've noticed.  There are a lot of countries that seem to hold the Spitfire pretty high.

I don't think the P-51 is a top two or three contender.  Really, I think it is between the Bf109 and Spitfire.
